Re: Not so hidden armor
Because you are not willing to accept people as they are no matter what, you are intolerant, Sigismund. Mord, you're more intelligent than this. He explained the difference between "tolerance" and "acceptance" up the thread. You're educated sufficiently to know that the definitions of "tolerance" a...

Re: Not so hidden armor
Mord, The topic at hand, specifically, is hidden plastic armor. More specifically whether or not it is right, kind, proper, and reasonable to require plastic armor to be covered. This has nothing to do with how one man may define medieval. If anyone defines medieval as "including formed plastic pla...

Re: Not so hidden armor
No excuses. My concern is other people, Sigismund. I think your are intolerant, and, to use a cliche, what you put out usually comes right back at you. If you are intolerant to people--no matter how your intentions are--they will most likely be intolerant of you. I have found in my time in the SCA ...

Yet, you make much of how people look and dress themselves. It's entirely possible that well dressed people can be intensely rude, ya know. I think you're simply looking for an excuse to be a show-off, Sigismund. Really, you could try a little more tolerance with folks. Mord. Of course I do. The ma...

Not everyone pursues fighting with the same enthusiasm as you do; it's possible that your opponent has an interest in other aspects of the Society, and is more willing to spend time in that other pursuit than on the list...

Re: Not so hidden armor
I have many purposes in the SCA, Sigismund: A. Have fun. B. See friends. C. as an outlet for my historical obsession--that is to say the study of history. My definition of fun has varied over the years, but these days, fun involves puting on gear and playing the whackity-whackity game. I have a ser...

I wouldn't mind the Pirates or the Celtoids, if they did those personas well and knew something about thier history, culture, etc. In truth, most of the pirates and celtoids have other interests--mostly having to do with some confused version of having sex and inflating their self-esteem. I am not as worried about recruiting these groups as retaining them. I'm not worried about that. I only want to retain them if they want to be medieval . Re: Not so hidden armor
A bedsheet tabard over plastic gear doesn't disguise anything, really. It looks almost as bad as no tabard, to my eyes, since those tabards weren't worn over armour in period either. Are plastic baskethilts allowed? "having no glaringly un-documentable aspects beyond those required for safety - ie: baskethilts, bargrills, cops, gauntlets, etc." would seem to say so, but then there is the "no exposed plastic" thing later on. I can't speak for the actual rules but would gauntlets...

Re: Future of SCA fighting
On the whole, I'd rather study the European history of the Middle Ages, a pursuit that has been encouraged by most folks in the SCA. In my opinion many here are so busy trying to deny what is "modern"--that context in which we live--that they can't find the time to understand what is "medieval." No ...
