Thanks for the feedback, figured as much but haven't had to focus on the more supple side :)

Re: Hardening Alum-tanned leather?

Ckanite: from what I've learned wax hardened freezes the fibers in place... easily cuts and mars compared to baked leather... basically you're forcing them to swell in the water then forcing those fibers to contract, vs freezing them in place. Something I'd like to add from personal experience... I ...

Re: Hardening Alum-tanned leather?

Soak it in molten lard until it's in, then break it until it's super-supple, mount metal plates to it. It's immune to horse sweat and your-sweat unlike vegtan, and once hot-stuffed with lard, is highly resistant to the elements with a waxy sheen. Worthless for "hard" leather, awesome for supple. Ho...

Re: Hardening Alum-tanned leather?

I was under the impression alum tanned leather was not hardenable, please correct my if I'm wrong. The pieces alum tanned I have are thin and suitable for pouches and whatnot, I've never worked anything but veggie tanned leather for armour in 10-12 oz for armour - I would assume if I were to use it ...

Re: Anyone heard of an armourer called "Ugo"?

My brother sent me a link to Ugo's work a few months ago via facebook, he was (until promoted) the MOS instructor for the Marines on welding... I basically sent a link back with a google image search... As far as mixing fantasy and functional armour I'd be hard pressed to find a better example than ...

More that a quick post it may be, but it's good to have this how-to from experience. To put it mildly. Thank you Kris! Gotta say the same, I've had a few long shifts so I haven't settled down to digest all the information. Glad to get a confirmation that I nailed a good candidate for strapping mate...

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

So, some calculating: 4" x 1.5" to the scale, 3 scales to the foot, 600 scales/roll. Sounds like this would get around most people pretty well... now how tall are you? The immediate question seems to be "do I need 600 scales for the job or do I need enough for 1200? Or do I include some larger, non...

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

Found this as a potential source for strapping... 200ft for under $40, hair under 20g high carbon. http://www.mcmaster.com/#14615t46/=qojsdt Only problem is its painted black, and iirc that stuff does not come off easy. Probably simpler to blacken the rings. Have 2000 rings from by the sword... havi...

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

Figured 20 with overlap, thanks, the armor you made is beautiful btw - As for weight how much is it if you don't mind me asking? Figure it'd be a little heavier but hopefully wear the same. Curious how you did the closures on yours?

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

Curious to know what a reasonable thickness in banding would be, found only one source of pre-made rings so far... If need be will go to a local metal dealer and see if they can take an equivelant sheet and shear it into strips for me... Though I do think the banding could be potentially lighter if ...

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

That's why we're interested in pallet strapping, Lost Celt. It's very thin and very stiff for its gauge. Smack it on something and it doesn't go 'tap tap' it rings 'bwisshh bwisshh.' So it keeps weight very reasonable in any small-scales much-overlapped situation like a brig. Turning to mail source...

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

so what are the typical thicknesses/make one would need for steel strapping for them to be viable? I'm assuming they're hardened already? And TRL doesn't sell materials for riveted maille anymore it seems, what is a good source these days for both full flat rings and the type you'd need to rivet? He...

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

I agree with you, don't get me wrong, I've done maille before but I'm thinking I'm being taken a bit out of context - with a decent punch I think it'd cover the surface area I'm trying to cover, drilling and filing the holes individually is just too much, I would say the rivited maille makes it abo...

Re: Anyone try making Plate Maille?

I've been interested in this type of design myself, after making a maille shirt I figure it might be a little less time consuming, and it just looks neat...
