Source of wire in the UK?
Back home I knew all kinds of places to get all kinds of wire, but now that I'm in the UK I'm having trouble. I've found some small, very expensive coils of galvy at the local hardware store, but that's it. Does anyone have any reccomendations for businesses and/or websites where I could buy wire?

Re: Firing the Anvil
He got thrown 10 feet back, over a metal work table, had all the hair burned off half his head and was permanently nearly deafened. Whoopsie! At least he wasn't permanently nearly dead! The anvils get used for some armourwork, though it's mostly stakes. However, I'd like to try curling from...

Talking of explosives and anvils, now I have never tried this.....and don't advocate it, but, In Alex Bealers book ' The Art of Blacksmithing', he mentions an old festival piece called 'blowing the anvil', and before some perverted and demented member of this forum thinks otherwise, they use black ...

Here's a pic from a couple years ago. The anvil is a #375 Hay Budden. It was once the anvil at the White Pine copper mine in Upper Michigan, somehow managed to end up downstate, and is now back in the UP. http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e68/hawkthrower/Blacksmithing/DSC02982.jpg And no, I don't NE...

The pictures that Karen posted show that most of the holes don't go all the way through, but they're archaeological drawings. It's possible that the holes have been filled with corrossion which hadn't been removed when the drawings were made, or perhaps they're drawplates that weren't finished. Just...

edit: I just found turma, turmae, defined as a troop of 30 horsemen. Turma specifically refers to a cavalry troop of thirty men being the tenth part of . . . Ceasar, Cicero and Livy. Horatio did use it to refer to any troop or throng. It is also connected with turba turbae (tumult or uproar) and wi...

The difference is eques is the nominitive ('the rider') and equitis is the genitive ('of the rider'). They're the same word, just different cases. The plural nomniative singular of eques would be 'equites'. There's caballarius (horseman), but it doesn't have the connotation of knight. edit: I just f...

Eric, Awesome videos! Watched them both this morning, I'll watch 'em again when I get home :) A couple questions, Why one piece on one gauntlet and two piece for the other? I saw you riveted a red leather strip to the edge of the cuff. Is that a "bumper" to protect the vambrace, or is there a lining...

What is the design theory behind that helmet style? What type of blow from what weapon was it meant to protect against? It looks very cool, and is quite an odd shape. I'm curious. It's a helm for the joust of peace, I believe. The original has gouges on either side if the central crease from lance ...

Have you looked at Castle Magic's reccommended reading list? There's a few things in there, at any rate. I've been going through basically the same thing, once I'm done with school and more or less settled I want to build a stone blacksmithing shop and a stone house, real stone construction, not thi...

What manuscript is this from??
Dear all, I need some help identifying a bit of medieval artwork. I've seen this around the web, and it even serves as the cover for Matthias Pfaffenbichler's book on armourers, but I can't find a reference to where it's from. Does anyone know the manuscript, collection, and/or library this is to be...

Unusual iron purse frame mechanism
I've been going through a lot of archaeological reports, and I found an interesting locking iron purse frame from the '71-78 Norwich survey (full citation below). It's of a type that I'm unfamiliar with, and the description of how it works has me scratching my head. Here are a couple illustrations a...

They've got all five volumes and the companion armour sales volume in the school library here, but I still want a copy for myself. Acorrding to Amazon AMS Press did a reprint in 2005, but I emailed them and they said they didn't know anything about it. True some of the information is dated, either d...

Use ear protection as well, Yeah. Just ask old_bear. But make sure you are standing on his left side. :P I wear ear protection all the time, and I've still ended up with tinnitus. I prefer safety glasses that contour to the face. Not forced up to it like goggles, but something that leaves less of a...
