Almain rivet elbows?
Has anyone got evidence of a rolled-&-riveted-cone couter used in an 'Almain rivet' style of splint arm harness? The average 'Almain rivet' arm seems to have more of an overgrown roundel than a proper couter, with a minimal dish that just barely wraps around the point of the elbow. This makes sense ...

Re: Soupcan elbows?
Yeah, the style most often referred to these days as "soupcan" is found in poleyns (knee cops) (mostly 'floating' articulation ones, from the middle to the end of the 14th century), not couters (elbow cops). It's interesting to compare some soupcan poleyns to some floating couters from the 16th cent...

'Box' gauntlet pattern?
Does anyone have a pattern for the old Moric 'box'-style gauntlets?
I am looking for a super quick but safe pattern for a friend who fights SCA with glaive a lot, but just lost his nice gauntlets, and can't afford to replace them right away.
Thanks in advance,

Sorry for the lack of follow-through here - Count Caillin was victorious for Countess Danielle, defeating Count Loric for Countess Diana in a very close and masterfully fought 3-round final. 1/8" neoprene, layered if necessary, is the best padding for thickness I've found; good felt is almost as effective, and looks better if exposed. I get neoprene from McMaster-Carr, fabric-faced for durability: http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-foam-sheets/=xrrxiy Contact cement works well for attach...

My answers will be similar to Swete's but not identical in all respects, so here goes. 1) If I want to make a 28" is it recommended that I still use rope around the edge with rawhide? 2) if yes to #1, how thick/what kind of rope 3) in relevance to #1/2, do you generally pin/tack(what size?) and glue...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Lorccan, Of course, nothing we ever do is really authentic. Our materials and techniques are wrong, but we all have to draw our "authenticity lines" somewhere. For me, a solid rivet cast in copper alloy just does not make the cut when the originals were clearly hollow constructs of iron. You might ...

I'm selling my geteld for $500, or best offer, delivered to Gulf Wars! I love this tent, had a hand in making it, but can't justify it for one man anymore. It starts out as .040" thick - depending on which chart you consult, it's around 19 gauge. Looking at that set, I believe the steel is alloy 1050, and painted black on the insides after heat-treating. They will take one hell of a beating.InsaneIrish wrote:how thick is the SS?

You can get copper nails and heat zinc pellets up. The key is making sure the zinc and copper have good contact. I did something like this once, though not en masse, and not sure what hammering would do to what is essentially a glaze. Ursus, I understand, but I think we're still in 'more time & mon...

For splinted limb armour and coat of plates I use 12ga. x 3/4" copper roofing nails and have them tin plated locally. If you're going to use them in volume then you could get them brass plated.
