He did say best way...no mention of most effective. So yes....a herring is an extremely viable option. I second this recommendation.

setting the blades is crucial. Was at an armouring party Yesterday in Bremerton. A B-2 was brought in for use and before I could stop them they were trying to cut 12 guage with it set for 16. Nicked the blades a bit in one spot. The nick was noticable when cutting anything after that. We were able t...

Here's the link. m I built one, and I'm going to have to change it a little bit. Mainly to add more braces to keep it stable. It really makes nice clean cuts fairly quickly...I was using 14 guage galvanized steel. A couple things to keep in mind.....you want to make sure when drilling your hole for ...

Attach a camail or aventail takes the ringing out of most helms, may not be the best option for historical purposes. The hanging wieght is the key.

I believe the people who would most benefit from this would not be the people looking to research or develop a persona, but more the person that doesn't have a persona and wants a place to begin. In many SCA resources on the web as well as in publications such as The Kown World Handbook, the first s...

You could do some annodized aluminum or annodized titanium to get colors similar to brass or bronze without the weight. Use titanium if you want strength, but it is much more expensive. If you are going with aluminum, you're probably going to need somewhere around 10 lbs(this is probably high end) o...

I'm in, I've only done basic things and only have basic tools at my disposal. I'm looking at building a new kit for myself, hopefully one that fits me better this time and falls better into my persona. And also a combat archery suit for my lady. We will see how ugly my stuff turns out to be but I th...

I've always used long handled tile cutters, they give a nice >< shape to the ends unlike most bolt cutters or scissor type snips that can warp the rings. I'm looking at building a setup to saw cut rings using a jewlers saw mounted on a drill with an jig to feed the coils past the saw blade, this wil...

I might be interested depending on the day that it's run. Probably wouldn't be enough interest at least in the beginning to do it a full year. Big question, to get into the class would you have to register as a student or would this be separate from the normal achedemia? Keep us posted, it's kind of...

Questions about a spangenhelm idea.

I'm in the SCA and looking to get out of my starter helm and into something that looks more period for my 1066 norman persona and fits me better. I'd like to try my hand at building a rivetted spangenhelm. I have enough 12 guage hot rolled steel for it. I'd like to use thin peices of leather to cove...

Yeah there's 2 problems with the dremel for this application. They die too quickly especially if the bushings aren't change kinda often. and they don't have the horse power, making you go slow or the bog down and you break discs. There's other rotary tool motors that have more horsepower but they're...

That's similar to a jump ringer system used to make butted links for jewlers. see: m or an all metal saw/jump ring tool: m I'm constructing something similar using ideas from both. Help with 1st project articulated knees.

I'm a fighter in the SCA, living near Seattle. I've been fighting off and on since 1997(more off than on). I'm starting my first project. I'm replacing the legs that I bought off the internet with some lower profile knees that I am making. This is my first REAL armouring project. I'm think doing ok ...

Looking for images of period stamped chainmail rings. Makers mark rings or entire pieces made using die stamped rings. If anyone has some pictures of the stamped rings that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
