Re: specialized or signature gear

There is a number of examples, beyond the obvious heraldic embellishments, where rich knights designed and had built armours that where particular to them. Emperor Maximillion and King Henry VIII are particular examples, but there are many. See Toby Capwell's documentary about the English armour wor...

Re: "Knights in the Middle Ages were not the brutal & mercil

I agree that socially younger people thease days have different expectations and are not thrust into an adult role early, if ever, these days. For the most part though basic human behavior was the same then as it is now. Even if they have responsibilities young men, particularly in groups, will act ...

Re: "Knights in the Middle Ages were not the brutal & mercil

I recently read "The Time Travellers guide to the Middle ages" and one of the points that I really hadn't thought of before is that the majority of the people were young. Particularly in the noble classes where young men were given great responsibilities at an age where today they would still be con...

There were actually a lot of SCA people who worked on this movie (13th Warrior). I had friends who did a lot of the blacksmithing (the osberg tripod) and there was negotiations for SCA seamstresses to do costuming but it was apperantly not cost effective. From what I heard they started out pretty go...

Gambesons are not required for SCA combat as such there are no regulations as to how thick or thin they can be. For most armours they can make wearing them more comfortable and reduce pain and bruising.
One way to make a cooler gambeson is to use natural materials like linen or cotton.
