Re: specialized or signature gear
There is a number of examples, beyond the obvious heraldic embellishments, where rich knights designed and had built armours that where particular to them. Emperor Maximillion and King Henry VIII are particular examples, but there are many. See Toby Capwell's documentary about the English armour wor...

Re: "Knights in the Middle Ages were not the brutal & mercil
I agree that socially younger people thease days have different expectations and are not thrust into an adult role early, if ever, these days. For the most part though basic human behavior was the same then as it is now. Even if they have responsibilities young men, particularly in groups, will act ...

Re: "Knights in the Middle Ages were not the brutal & mercil
I recently read "The Time Travellers guide to the Middle ages" and one of the points that I really hadn't thought of before is that the majority of the people were young. Particularly in the noble classes where young men were given great responsibilities at an age where today they would still be con...

There were actually a lot of SCA people who worked on this movie (13th Warrior). I had friends who did a lot of the blacksmithing (the osberg tripod) and there was negotiations for SCA seamstresses to do costuming but it was apperantly not cost effective. From what I heard they started out pretty go...

I wear lacrosse gear to which I have added foam on the shoulders and a light gambeson under my maille. I find that works pretty well. Occasionally I will fight without the maille and find that it makes a big difference. It takes a considerable amount of sting out of shots and reduces amount of bruis...

With mine I first started with a bolt through the holes but it wasn't long before the rattan failed at that point. A friend had his wedged tightly with tape, so I thought I'd try that but I also used a milling machine to make the hole your handle goes through an oval rather then a circle. Now the hi...

For the crossguard I used a milling machine to make the hole oval rather then round. This helps prevent much of the spinning they are prone to. The sword is then shaped so it wont go father up the blade then I wind a bunch of tape under it to keep it from slipping down. There is some movement but no...

We have a bell wedge that we made ourselves after many years with a marquee. Actually we know have two wedges (one for us, one for the kids). We use a sawhorse or swingset frame set up. It works great. I can set it up myself no problem but two people is better. With that set up we have plenty of roo...
