Re: the making of a suit in pictures

Here's all the 172 pics I had. If I remember correctly, there were a pic of a baby inside the sallet? That one I don't have. But I hope they are in right order.

I have them and I think they are numbered in correct order, I need to check that. Should I put them in google photos album?

There's about 200 pages of armour and 120 of weaponry. The rest is text and photos of people.

Re: Hans Prunner: "THE GWYNN COLLECTION" by Carlo Paggiarino

Got my copy today. It's a big book with lots of great images. It is a bit different from the previous books. This time it is more of a catalogue with a whole view of a piece and a description. Some items have additional detail shots. Here's my Prunner collection. Gwynn on far right. http://i15.photo...

How about Thorkil? He has made some pretty awesome looking dark age helmet replicas.

Re: My work, closed sallet in prog. (03-20-16)

Thanks Tom, everything makes sense. I think I'm gonna hold the re-enforcement plate down with a hidden spring pin or just play with the springiness of the metal and hold the piece down with a round rivet head (hole slids on top of it). Makes it easier to replace lining strips if the piece is not riv...

Re: My work, closed sallet in prog. (03-20-16)

Thanks Ideval and Tom! Tom, there's couple of great photos in your album that I hadn't seen before. Especially the pic that shows the helmet from up and behind. I think the last pic shows everything almost fully closed. Visor might be just tad open. Is there or should there be some sort of mechanism...

Re: My work, closed sallet in prog. (16-03-16)

Here's where I'm currently at.

Visor is somewhat fitted but I'm not fully satisfied how it currently sits with the upmost bevor plate. So, some tweaking is still needed.
Back of the skull need also some further attention. I think it is slightly too long. I need to cut and shape it to get it right.

Re: My work, closed sallet in prog. (13-03-16)

Here's some more progress.

I have managed to make the bevor. It is a three piece construction. Lames need some attention though. Some shape corrections and pivot points need some moving. I have also started to shape the visor.

Re: My work, closed sallet in prog. (06-03-16)

Thanks people! I have now welded the neck extension piece on and somewhat shaped it. I might have to adjust the length later but now it's good. I could have done the bowl in two pieces but I had these halves left from an another unfinished project. So why not use them? I have also reshaped the brow ...

Re: My work, new project (22-02-16)

Here's couple more potatoes. My dslr battery was empty. I've got the brow reinforcement plate roughed and bolted on. There is some cracking in the sharp corners. I should have left the areas more curved but there's some extra material though so I can cut the cracks out. Next, I'll make a pattern for...

Re: My work, Roman helmet finished (12-01-15)

It is time for a new project! This time it is not a commission but just for the pleasure of smacking steel and a bit of a challenge to myself. I'll try to do something in the line of this particular helmet: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e1/HJRK_A_110_-_Sallet_combination_of_Maximi...

Re: My work, new helmet in prog. (11-22-15)

Thanks everybody!

Andy, the grill frame was somewhat planned but the rest was freestyle. I first bent a mock up out of a thinner wire and when I was happy, I bent the round bar and welded it on.

Re: My work, barbute done (04-06-15)

Thanks guys!

I'm back in the shop now, every sunday for 2-3 hours. Next helmet will be a Roman cavalry helmet for sca fighting. I have started making it and I have couple of bands ready.
Need to replace a handle of my Halberds dishing hammer. It gave up after many years of hammering.

Jiri Klepac has made some fancy rivets from what looks like a single piece. Maybe he has some thoughts?

Re: My work, barbute in progress (03-30-15)

Barbute is now done!

Visor hinge rivets are 5mm steel rivets capped with 1mm brass. There's also leather suspension system and 4 point chin strap.

I'm happy how this turned out.

They hold the spring steel strips where those two pins above the visor are connected. I'll countersink those holes and file rivets smooth once peened.

Thanks, Randall and Marcos!

Here's some new shots. Ihave started sanding it, pierced the visor and made pins to hold the visor down. Next I'll have to make a suspension system and chinstrap and finish sanding and polishing.

Re: My work, barbute in progress (03-16-15)

Thanks Sevastian! Got some work done yesterday. Visor is nearly done. Only the bottom needs some shaping. I also rolled the bottom edge of the bucket. Damn, it was challenging! 2,5mm ain't easy. Next sunday I'll start grinding and polishing and suspension system & chinstrap needs to be done too. Her...

Did some hinge work yesterday and the visor is now in place. Pivot point is about 1cm behind the widest sweet spot. I guess it's ok there. Next sunday I'll finish the hinges, they need some shaping, and try to finish the visor.

Re: My work, barbute in progress (02-25-15)

Mac, when you say interesting turn, what do you mean? If I remember correctly (I don't have the bucket in my hands now) that ear to crest weld line is right about in the middle. I could cut a slice off of the arms and weld them back together. But that doesn't sound very good idea. Things could go wo...
