yep , what he said. LARGE lineman's pliers with tiny holes ground out near the tip , 16GA "fence wire" and easy peasy

yes that's Dave's kit. Signo is correct for that look but you can simulate this shade with "gun blue". You would need to experiment with timing and diluting the chemical.
