Re: Unpadded Maces vs. Unpadded Polearms
Look at the wording in your kingdom. If there is no minimum length on a polearm, nothing stops it from getting passed as a 30" polearm (just make sure it is possible to put both hands on the haft). Someone I know made the double-ended dagger as a joke, about 10" long with a very tiny cutting edge.

Re: Three questions on the Bayeux Tapestry.
I agree with Dan, but am giong to word it a bit differently. Nothing I see would prove to me that it is anything but maille. There have been other interpretations, that have more or less backing them up, which postulate other types of material (padded garments, scale, etc). Looking at their same evi...

Armour sites in Barcelona?
Hey All,
Traveling to Barcelona and spending a few days there before heading on to our more permanent destination. Any particular museums with older armour I should look for? I have the Montjuic castle and museum on the list. Only have public transit, if that makes a difference.

Re: The Knights Templar Mid 12th Century - 14th Century
I would look at Oakeshott's terminology. A X or XI is going to be single handed (both by size of hilt and blade length), whereas XII is the oversized version of those (roughly speaking). As far as typical, you get into a grey area. You have either iconographical evidence (manuscripts, effigies, etc)...

I would highly suggest finding the specific book/codex about garb, possessions and other rules governing the order. Here is a website translating the first 76 parts of the "Latin Rule". http://www.the-orb.net/encyclop/religion/monastic/t_rule.html http://www.templiers.org/regle-eng.php As far as the...

I'm game. The number of people that are still drunk at that point would be staggering though. That is why the battles should be at sunrise. Get them out of the way early and you have the rest of the day to play. 8) You have never seen a human body contort in interesting ways, until you see a guy wi...

Agreed with the abuse of it. Otherwise, armour worked. If I move my leg, and my hauberk catches the sword, slowing it down, then that is armour doing its job. Same as glancing off a helm because someone tilted their head, etc. So I work it into what is causing it and why? If someone is wearing real ...

They look great! What was your inspiration for the "oversized bretache" for lack of a better term on the second? Haven't seen anything quite like it before, but Spain is the red-headed child of the rest of Europe during this time (fashion-wise).

Wood grain shelf paper on the haft of the axe? Or simply stain on the skin? Not sure why grey duct tape was chosen. Tends to make it stand out more to my eye. Otherwise I am on to very nit-picky stuff. Leather wise, I would try and re-wet the scabbard and see about smoothing out the part where the r...

Re: Critique My SCA Kit
You can get away with round-topped nasals, depending on class. Agree with the brass ornamentation drawing it back time-wise. I would look at trying to hide the arm and knee protection. Maille wise, I would recommend a drape for the helm, and long-sleeved hauberk. Cant really tell how low the maille ...

You might have better luck looking at true byzantine. Egfroth did a lamellar sleeve interpretation that looked amazing, and i beleive they had a version of splinted limbs.

Re: help with documentation for pic of varangian guard, plea
Honestly the period is not super important as long as the kit is consistant and documentable. I am also fairly confused as to the differences between the rus, varangian guard and the byzantine soldiers... I feel like there must be some overlap I am not picking up in my research efforts. If there is...

Rule is that it can't penetrate more than 1/2" into a 1" opening (Society level). So it sounds like it would need a layer or two of duct tape to make it.

I have used climbing rope underneath the canvas facing to good effect. Just enough spring to give me about a year out of shields (about the same I was getting from heater hose). Wouldn't know it was edged unless you cut it apart.

Most of it at this point is extrapolation from artwork, or cross-culture pollination. There is very little to no universally accepted evidence your average norman soldier would have splinted forearms and shins.
