For now I'll just suggest Nadler Metal Crafts. Very reliable and tested for quality. Once shipping is back to normal he should have a larger selection available again. There are certainly other vendors though.

Where you would have rivits, pass through threaded rod with nuts placed on the inside as you pass the rod through. You will twist the interior nuts into place then put nuts on the exterior. This braces very well. If the surfaces don't meet the rod at a right angle just bend the rod

Lamellar plates. Easy to put together and you add rows as your children grow. Try Valkerie Forge.

It was an easy way to add protection to a spot everyone started to feel nervous about. The weapons we're getting bigger and you can expect a number of shots to hit this area. Fighters brought extra discs and handed them out.

The material is forgiving. Use a magnet and brac parts. I use threaded rod for braces. You can buy a pyrometer for about $20. On eBay.

I own a pair. For SCA combat, hell no. That plastic is a flexible vynl. With thumb and forefinger you can easily pinch the hinges on each side such that they meet.

Just a translation artifact. Think of it as model or style 1 and so on. There are many Polish, Russian and Ukrainian sellers that make gambeson/padded garments. Each has different 'type 1' and so on.

Yes, there is a huge difference. The 301 is at least twice as resilient though the hardness makes a difference. It's commonly found as 1/2, 3/4 and full hard. 3/4 is more common to use as it can still be shaped....barely.

Re: HEAVIER SCA combat :) ?
Risk and lack of preparation go hand in hand. I know people who use padded weapons who get injured, I know plenty of SCA fighters who get injuries due to lack of or poor equipment. The steel fighting groups require much better armor than the rattan groups, likewise for rattan over foam. I remember w...

On the rebated steel, look up American Combat League, Historical Medieval Battle, International Medieval Combat Federation and Adrian Empire to name a few. As for hitting lighter, no. Take a look at any video from M1 Medieval and judge for yourself.

About the cheapest but good looking body armor would be a Visby style cost of plates. Use heavy canvas (painters drop cloth, two layers) roofing nails for rivits and a traffic sign (old signs usually for free at a state road maintenance facility) or old empty plastic barrels.

Re: ISO-Heat treating and tempering of 4130 plates
You have a large number of small parts, many with simple curves. The parts with the simple curves are liable to twist on you during the quench. This is more likely if you do a water quench. Look into an oil quench. I used transmission fluid for the same reasons. Worked well. As to temperatures, cons...

If you are not going to hear treat, use regular (401) stainless and save some cash. While work hardening will add some strength it is minor in comparison to heat treating.

Re: Price Check Spring Stainless Bascinet
All right, just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Spring steel fails with a crack or a hole if it is not tempered correctly. The issue is that over time you have no idea how fatigued the metal is until it fails. With mild steel or unhardened stainless, the dents tell you everything you need to know. ...
