Unique Floating Knees
I am going to be working on a scaled cuisse. I am looking for sources on 'unique' or suitable knee protection. Some of the sources show the scale covering the knee piece (which I do not want to do), but I am after something like this. Anyone seen any sources for something like this, maybe easier to ...

Here is what I have. It is thin, comparable to a penny. And soft. I do not know what kind of aluminum. http://i1370.photobucket.com/albums/ag276/scottmfinke/IMG_0425_zpsfcrvabvo.jpg Here is the skirting, and wearing it. http://i1370.photobucket.com/albums/ag276/scottmfinke/IMG_0426_zpsp9czczua.jpg h...

Re: In Search Of - metal scales...
Apparently Steel Mastery sells scales. They are 1mm (so, pretty thin - about 19 gauge - but they are 'shaped' to be more rigid.)
They have them in steel, stainless and titanium. I don't know about availability...

Re: In Search Of - metal scales...
I would probably need 400 or so at that size to make a tonlet.
Do you make those? or is that a project that never happened... they look nice.
I am trying to find a source because I might want to do a scale camail also eventually. There even some cool sabotons made from scale.

Re: In Search Of - metal scales...
The ones I have now are around 2" x 3". They are aluminum - but a bit thin, and they dent a lot (I have a jig that I use to sort of smack them back into shape after a tourney). I guess something a little smaller and thicker (and rounded) would serve me better. That is why I think this should not be ...

In Search Of - metal scales...
I am looking for scales. Preferably aluminum, and preferably dished or curved in some way. Do any of the makers of lammellar offer this? Sources? I do not want the tiny 'ringlord' scales with one hole. Something beefier, and larger... with a round bottom and two holes for riveting/sewing. I have a s...

Re: What do you think about laser-cut visors?
I have a Temple Battle Works visor fitted to my helm. I just got it a few months ago. I like it just fine. It is no more 'non-historical looking' than my bent old welded grill, and I have received a lot of compliments on it. It is a bit heavier, and I have had to re-pad my helm to keep it nice & tig...

Re: Combat of the Thirty/Deed Weapons
Not much traffic! I have fought in the 30 at Pennsic twice. I always use my 6-foot pole axe. It is fitting for the period (plus, I really like it and use it all the time!) Most of the combatants had either pole axe or bastard sword. Other weapons I have seen are longswords (bastard swords) and other...

Re: Temple Battleworks New Year Stock Liquidation.
I have a question. Can these be made into clap-visors? I have a bascinet (a nice one) but I don't want the decorative grill welded on, but to be removable.
Is there a smith who does - or could - take one of these beauties and make it into a center hinge klappvisor that straps around the back?

Re: Safest and Least Expensive Shipping to Australia?
I have had experience making a big claim on a domestic shipment here in the US. I shipped a skid full of printed collated books to a bindery. The shipment was flipped & pretty much destroyed during delivery. The bindery rejected the delivery and I was 'told' I would 'never' get a cent from UPS. Well...

How do I get rust off of it? It has some 'hot spots' already. - green scrubby too harsh? fine steel wool?

Maintenance of 'blued' helmet
My son purchased a helm at Pennsic . Nice little nasal. It has a blued finish. Looks great, but I really don't know what we have to do to maintain it. I know bluing somewhat resists rust, but is not rust-proof. Should we just keep it oiled (I use CLP) and treat it like any other mild helm? Maybe wax...

Anyone have source material for what a 'viking' norse banner would look like? I know they were not heraldry-mad - but I am sure they had something. I know Harald had his Raven banner 'Landwaster'... I have one by By My Hand. I have had it for many years and I love it. I find the solid rubber ones too heavy, and punishing on my friends. The shape is great, and it is just long enough to reach over shields in melees.

Re: Is riveted aluminum chainmail viable for SCA combat?
I am thinking about aluminum because I just want a couple sleeves to mount under my surcoat, and maybe stretch some mail across my greaves. Seems like the trick is to treat it somehow, also, to keep the oxidation dust to a minimum.

Re: Questions about Gambesons, Circa 1200
I made mine without a collar, because it would interfere with my helm, and I made it button up the front because I could not imagine squirming out of a wet sack after a day of fighting in the sun. I did my sleeves separate, but from matching fabric. It is quilted canvas. With two or three layers of ...

I have fought in a lot of different helms over the years. My first helm was a bullet-shaped spangen with 2 narrow eyeslots that rested directly on my nose (in the 1980s). I have use grills for a long time (on a bascinet lately). BUT a couple years ago I bought an awesome square top pothelm with narr...
