Thesis on Armouring Techniques in the Late Medieval Period

http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4376/1/Dupras%20PhD%20Thesis%20Volumes%201%20%26%202.pdf This is a seriously good read, the author hails from a blacksmithing background, and has spent a vast amount of time in the Royal Armouries collection studing the hammer marks inside and outside of the armour. Fr...

Re: Armourers (uk based preferably)

My strong recommendations would be: Steve Lunn (White Rose Apparel) (I've known him for years. He is professional, highly skilled and versatile. His brigs are extremely good,) Fred Ryall (Ryall Armouries) (Specalises in fire blackend armour. He has a very good eye for form, and is a really decent ch...

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the ground...

Very nice workmanship, some lovely lateral thinking going on there, and beautifully executed.

Re: Wisby Coat of Plates: Pop-Rivets, Hammer Rivets, or Sew

I've been using copper roofing nails for years.
I showed a corrizina I made to Steve Lunn, and explained that I used roofing nails.

He looked at me nonplussed and said very simply "That's why they used to call them arming nails..."

My suggestion?
The weave infill could do with being a tighter mesh of thinner strips.

Other than that its looking good.

* I use an English Wheel for 90% of my planishing (the other 10% is only because a radius is to tight to fit in the E-Wheel)
* WD-40 makes a really good blackening oil when sprayed on hot metal, but for the love of all thats holy, DO IT OUTSIDE!

Dumnonni does look pretty sweet. I would still say it is still plenty different from the boffer-kids I had in mind. The big difference being the level of competence and commitment. I feel sorry for the OP. he probably wanted to actually talk about making dwarf-esque gear. Dumnonni is a bit of an ex...

Now, now. My stereotypes are based on subjective anecdotal evidence! And I see that they have not failed to paint a picture. Not all geeks who play with simulated weaponry are cut from the same cloth. Duke Shield-Denter Gamboised-Cuisses is probably a different sort of fellow from Boffer-Steve, the...

Sorry, crossed wires myself. My sincere apology. I don't think we'll ever really know what sort of finished existed that far back, certainly, while the coppergate helm has a darkened metal skull it can be successfully argued that this is due to oxidization from being in the well for over a thousand ...

Re: Coppergate Helm (in progress Pics)

I'm quite a fan of blackened finishes myself, quite a fair amount of historical armour had differing finishes, including fire blackening. Documentary evidence at the Royal Armouries shows that some of the plain silver armour in the RA collection is due to polishing over the intervening years, Thom R...

Does anyone have an e-copy of this book? as its seemingly impossible to find a dead tree version.

If so, would it be possible to arrange some method of sending me a copy, I'm trying to source a copy to help me finish my helm.

Thanks.

Me, I get it very hot* and then quench in WD40

Both work well.

How did you do the black? I used a technique inspired by your flame thrower to get it to a blue, then I sprayed WD-40 on it while it was still hot.
