I think something like this is what you're talking about?
You may see also this. Not 14th century, but interesting nonetheless (to me anyways).

Thanks again for all of the kind words guys! I think this was a great initial proof of concept piece, but I have a few sleeker ideas on the drawing board. Thanks to Mr. Capwell for bumping the post and reinvigorating my desire to begin the Waistcoat Suit 2.0! It will indeed include mail accents, and...

It does appear that the whole cuirass is a little big on you, but I think the shape of the breastplate is really the biggest problem. The breast plate doesn't have enough depth to it, so when the top part sits flat against your chest (like it's supposed to) the bottom of the breastplate kicks out fa...

Churburg S9 Arm Pic Request
Does anyone have any more shots of the S9 arm in Churburg? I'd love to see the closure of the vambrace and any other views of the couter. Does anyone know if there's a turner on the vambrace? It looks like there is only one lame between the couter and the vam, but it appears to have a rivet in the c...

Has anyone ever tried layering a russett finish over a heat coloring? I'm curious about the possibilities of adding more richness to a russet with a straw, blue or purple under color. If so, is it as simple as just coloring the metal before you apply the russett, or should other steps be taken to he...

Re: Unorthodox articulation
The most alarming problem I see with the "inside out" configuration is that while in the extended position, the edges of the plates of the cop and lames would directly contact the wearer's limbs. A direct hit to the elbow or knee would drive the plate edges into the body. With traditional articulati...

Just wanted to add a pic of me wearing the waistcoat at a preview show in Baton Rouge last Thursday. The arms were pointed to a dress shirt and had torn out by the time this pic was taken. Please disregard the goofy look on my face -_- http://media.225batonrouge.com/img/photos/2008/07/11/19_t450.JPG...

Wow, thanks for all of the info everyone. Your help is much appreciated! So I guess my answers then are: 1.) How long prior to and after 1470-1475 might these chains have been worn? A.) Maybe as early as 1400 to as late as 1475, but not very much later than that. 2.) How common might they have been?...

So a few of us may have seen the pictures of the Breda effigy linked in Marc van Hasselt's thread. The pauldrons LOOK pretty cool (cooler than I thought they would), but they're not gonna work. You might consider a modified spaudler design (gotta keep those squared-off shoulders!). Because they aren't designed properly, or because the lapels will get in the way? It's too late to change them now ...

Meh. Got an arm and some detail shots. I forgot to weigh the damned thing, so I'll have to do that. I'm not too happy with the arm right now. The transition from the pauldron is a little awkward, but it's too late to rework it. It'll grow on me I think. Everything needs a little tweaking. Any sugges...

Thanks again everyone :D Also how much does it weigh? The waistcoat and tassets weigh a total of 14 lbs. The fedora will likely have to be one of those lagniappe things that will have to wait until after the BFA show, but it would certainly complete the look. Personally, I think you should name this...

So I've made a little progress and figured I'd post. The cuirass is nearly done and I've got pauldrons sort of roughed in. Needs a little TLC, as I've left it sitting around in my studio after touching it with my "acid hands of death" and there are rusty finger prints all over it. For those who miss...

Looking for more info on the shape and construction of waistcoat cuirasses (y'know, the ones that open in the front instead of the side.) From wikipedia: A lantern shield is a very unusual weapon/shield design that was used in Italy between the 16th and 17th centuries. Both for attack and defense, there were enough tools embedded in the design that some might call it an Italian "Swiss-army-shield". Born of the need to protect one's se...

Does anyone have a good shot of the back side of the "lantern" shield in Vienna? I have one rather blurry shot that I can make out some of the details on, but there are a few thing I'm still confused about... For example, is the "handle" anything more than just something to grip? When I first looked...

Besides, after the grade, all you have to do is re-make the center piece and re-attach all of the pieces to a new lining. Much easier to do than re-making the whole thing. That's what I was getting at with this comment: I could cut out the liner, make a new front plate, install a NEW liner :P I was...

I suppose that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but honestly, there are some things that "artists" do in the pursuit of art that I don't understand. You made a well constructed piece of armor, smooth flowing shape, swept lines, clean presentation, something that would encourage a viewer to peer...
