The Chinese Terra cotta Warriors used the downward overlapping lammellar on the torso, changing to upward overlapping over the hips. Gives a nice wasp-waist look if you are interested in that. Obviously worked well, according to above testimony. It worked well enough to still be in use up into the 1...

I like my Malory straight, not diluted, not futzed with. Sir Thomas Malory spent an appreciable fraction of the fifteenth century confined in prison for ramping about behaving as if might conferred right. Re: If I were to get a welder, what kind should I get?
No, I'm not entirely sure what the term "fix stuff" means, This is a highly advanced and technical term. I'd explain it, but according to IBoH Local #114 bylaws, I am not allowed to. (IBoH = International Brotherhood of Husbands). You can however request an explanation, as long as you submit the pr...

LMFAO Animal! I wonder what the freight would be like on 40,000 figs? What the heck can you make with figs anyway? I just like eating them like fruit popcorn. Useless fig information: There are about 50 figs (depending on quality and type) per pound. Wholesale figs are packed in 30 lb. cases. (appr...

Re: I am edging my lamellar harness with leather, some quest
1) before I go much further, how tight should lamellar fit? Right now I can squeeze it on over 1/4 inch of padding, is that too tight? lamellar, like maile, should have some room to expand and contract, but should also fit well. Vague? Yea :) 2) How do I do an inside right angle neatly? Make a diag...

I'm holding out for a better contemporary written description - such as "general so and so had in his inventory 3 suits of shanwenjia, each of plate size n x n, made of iron" wouldn't that be wonderful. don't put the funny little attachments on the ends of the sleeves. Aside from that you should be golden. Good luck! Those funny little attachements are actually period. Just depends on the region. They are Mongolian for the most part. Here's a cool site for you. http://www.library.utoronto.ca/east/...

Hi, I know this thread is getting old, but I don't get online like I used to with the kids and all. I also am bothered by the apparent wastage and expecially by the no surviving armours....

I'm of the mind lately that there are few if any excuses to not come onto the field in a period (or mostly period) kit. I've heard the cost excuse, and can point to many period rigs that can be done for under $150 (minus helm). I figure, if you can afford garb, then you can afford armor. (I don't kn...

These were used from at least the 15th century right up to the 19th, but this one will be a part of a 16th century Ottoman harness. Or at least, Ottoman-like, as the helmet will be rather indian. Re: Chinese "Coin" motif silk---for Mongols?
I have got a beautiful bunch of silk like this http://www.transprism.com/catalog/images/0006.jpg that my mom brought me from China (except mine is a deeper blue and has gold coin motif). What cultures and periods is this appropriate for? I mean how far back? Would it be appropriate for any European...

Re: Lamellar/scale ideas and questions
Is there such a thing as Lamellar laced to a light leather or heavy linen garment? And if not how late was scale armor used? Two cool things I like about this armor.. 1) There is a centerline down the chest and back. The lamalae go right over left as the head to the left, and left over right as they go to the right of the centerline. 2) The lamalar rows are staggered like bricks. Ok, so there is alot of cool stuff I like ...

Regarding the "waste" issue. If the scales were cut from bronze then there would be no waste since it can be recast. Yea..except that post-Tang Chinese scale and lamelar armor was done in iron. The document states the armor being in use from 600-1600 AD. The Tang dynasty period is about 400 AD. (Gi...

Given all of this, the complete lack of surviving examples, and the armour's very high degree of wasteage compared to comparably-protective armor (would this be notably more protective than standard lamellar? Enough to justify the difference?), I believe that an application of Occam's Razor strongl...

I'd call it a representation of the pattern, this looks to me like a miniature, so 54mm scale?? It isn't a representation of the pattern. The iconographical evidence shows no gaps between the plates. The whole point of scale armour is to overlap the plates. Robinson's suggestion does not do this. L...
