The only other US based seller of imported "decorator" armour that I've dealt with is http://therionarms.com.

Re: 18g vs 16g Maille

No idea about any group's regs (besides SCA, which, as noted, has no regs for mail), but the only reason for 16ga riveted or welded mail is if you want the extra weight. In terms of strength, 18ga is fine for riveted or welded mail. Back in the bad old days when butted mail was all we had, we had pr...

I like the black stuff Windrose and a few others sell, but I wouldn't know what to call it if you're trying to get it from a non-SCA source.

I've known a few people who went through 1 a month or so. When I'm really fighting a lot, I do 2-4 a year, with 1-2 a year more typical since i'm a lazy-ass.

If you search the Archive (I'm way too lazy to search myself and give you a link ;-) ), Brother (now Count Sir) Amos the Pious posted pics documenting the way he covered a pair of lacrosse gloves to match the Mac Bible look. (He also subsequesntly added mail over that, which he also documented.)

Re: Awesome video

This is a beautifully shot and edited video. I was particularly impressed by how well it avoided anything glaringly modern (other than tape on weapons, hose on shield edges, and plastic cup hilts, which would be damn hard to edit out of a video of SCA combat...).

Very cool. I particularly like that all the combat shots were about the striving during and the camaraderie after, without the victory being shown. This is a group of friends. On a tangential note: I have been away from the game and this video was the first I've seen of an old friend wearing some n...

Re: Music for Pell Work

I think Music for Pell work is a really bad Idea. It will only serve to train you into a strict rhythm. if your pellwork is in strict time, you will not be able to make natural choices in blow selection or delivery. Not all your shots should be recovering in the same time, and your natural timing s...

This is purely speculative - I mean to try it out someday when I have more cash on hand than I do at the moment - but I have wondered whether PMC could be used in much the same way as mercury gilding. When fired, the clay binder burns off, leaving just the gold, much like the mercury burned off in ...

Another term that might be helpful in your research is "mechanical gilding". Electroplating is obviously well past 1600. I suspect you will want to get the steel extremely clean after polishing. Like, pickled in acid clean. This appears useful (and talks about using this technique on steel): http:/...

Re: Next West Kingdom Crown Format

Making leg strikes equivalent to body/head strikes will (1) make an easier target a more rewarding one, and/or (2) promote the use of longer shields, which I find unaesthetic. I don't find knee fighting to be a wonderful alternative, but it can be aesthetic if practiced similarly to the custom in A...

Finals Conrad (still undefeated) vs Mons. Caidan tradition is to make the Finals 2/3 regardless of either fighter's previous loss, so being undefeated gives Conrad no specific advantage.

Check out your local art supply store for artists' canvas - I can get 7 OZ at 120" wide for a couple bucks a yard, and it's tighter weave than the dropcloth stuff, so it should shed water better.

I was on an extreme low calorie ketogenic diet for much of 2014, while increasing my physical activity, including SCA armoured combat. I was in the best condition of my life before falling back into bad habits, and if I had the cash on hand to do another round of the same program I would jump at it.
