Re: Well, not exactly armour...but still related

I have seen that anvil in person many times. :) I have plans for a 30-40 pound decorated anvil similar to that this winter. Traditionally made though. Built up from wrought iron, steeled for the faceplate.

Re: Well, not exactly armour...but still related

Thanks all for the kind words. I figure if you're using a tool day in and day out, shouldn't it be pretty as well as functional? :) I use 1045 for my hammers. I also use 4140 for some stakes and mini anvils, but for the majority of my struck tools, I go with 1045. I'm not having luck posting images ...

Well, not exactly armour...but still related

Hi all, Been a while since I was last on here. I've gone in and out of the world of armouring for the past few years, getting more interested and involved in blacksmithing. One thing lead to another and I've become focused on heavier (hand) forgings, especially as it relates to tool making. Armour m...

Re: How to ship heavy tools

Freightquote.com I ship anvils and large heavy tools with them all the time. Find the best rate, add insurance, done. It's always cheapes to do a dock to dock delivery-takes away the cost of needing a lift gate service. Most lumber yards are willing to unload something for you for a pack of beer... ...

if you're using it to (cold) dish, into a form, wouldn't that take out the need to planish anyways? provided your bottom dish is radiused enough to prevent marring.

Re: extant armourers tools...

Wade, it's called "Castle Rock Museum" and it's in Alma, WI. I don't know if it's actually new or if it's becoming public. I've looked over dozens of books in my library, and that was the first one on my list. I very much like the anvil at the Higgins; I cannot recall what is in Chicago, but if it's...

Hi all, I'm looking for pictures of extant armourers tools. Stakes, hammers, anvils...artwork and engravings will do too. Speculative tools will do as well. Please post where the pieces are from. I would like pictures for several reasons; I'd like to forge some of these tools for myself to use, as w...

a wonderful video and a queston on rouge

Hi all, I just had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled today, so I've been spending the day eating pudding and surfing the net. I came across a most wonderful video on a German Coppersmith a few weeks back and now have time to watch it in depth. It's in German, but if you have a half hour I highly re...

Cian, if you already have a few spare belt parts here's what you do. buy your brass, and anneal it it. take your belt mount, and with a soft hammer (rawhide) beat it into the brass sheet, which is sitting atop a stump, or hard sandbag. one good blow sets it, then you can refine from the other side (...

Ingelri- whenever you tool leather you NEED to back the leather with something so it does not stretch. whether it is two layers of duct tape (overlapping vertical and horizontal) or rubber cemented to Masonite, it is a very nessesary step to avoid distortion. Marcos, it is far more simple to pattern the leather band before the vervelles are installed, as all you have to do is trace through the holes. if you must pattern after the vervelles are riveted, get some blue painters tape (or tape that can easily be removed) and put it over the area that needs to...

this is fantastic. The form is excellent, but I am especially impressed with your finish. how id you achieve it? I love the small hairline "raising cracks" still visible. these can be seen on some of Albert Collins work as well, as he too finishes by hand.
