Re: Revolutionary War era matchlocks?
Dunno if it is germane, but there is extant footage of the Viet Cong preparing to assault Điện Biên Phủ. In a clearing in the jungle, they are cleaning and preparing their weapons, including a lot of Japanese WWII stuff. It can clearly be seen that there is one guy working on a matchlock. Z There w...

Re: I wanna be a 14TH CENTURY SCOT
Randall, I'd say possibly, but worth remembering that in 1345 the Scots are going through the Second Wars of Independence, so older designs that might have been cheaper may have been around as well.
Only a conjecture, I'm more musing aloud here than saying for definite.

Tibbie, I'm not familiar with an UnderArmor-type shirt, could you explain what you mean please? It's basically a from-fitting/compression shirt (or shorts, and they've expanded the line a lot) made out of, depending on brand and type, polyester/elastane or poly/spandex, (Or nylon/spandex, etc, etc....

Another question about linen and wool: if you're wearing sweat-soaked linen under sweat-soaked wool and the temperature drops, will your body heat be able to dry the linen? Will the wool keep you warm enough despite a cold, wet linen shirt/smock next to your skin? Or do you have to change into a dr...

I can't bring myself to be polite to someone who has written off what myself and others do as "boorrrrrinnngg" and how it's all a "yawn". Then ignore my posts. A main other reason common people couldn't travel was disease. Really? So why did so many people travel after the first Plague outbreak in 1349? As you noted below, the quote comes during the time of Shakespeare. The Great Plague of London wasn't until the mid-1600's. The great plague had its first...

Combat - this is where it gets tricky. I want the battle to be authentic, I also want it to be enoyable for not only those watching, but also those taking part. Ah, but what are you trying to do with the combat? Entertain, or educate? Are the two mutually exclusive? If not, what mechanics are used ...

Randall, The highest rank of noble we have is that of man who is a distant cousin (with emphasis on the 'distant' part) of the current Lord Fraser. This means he is kept in a fashion by the family, but he has had to make his own way in the world, leading a company of men to the wars in Germany and F...

Anger and Pride. I know of a group in Scotland who have become notorious for bad behaviour: If there's shite happening at an event, chances are they're involved. This can range from winding people up to the point that they're ready to hit someone (if you try to return the favour, they start screamin...

And getting back to the OP, the devil is in the details. Oh, not real death, but the fact that it was a very important part of life then. One of the strangest moments I had as a re-enactor was when we were doing a American Civil War tactical. We were in a line, firing and we were getting flanked on one side, and our position was getting compromised. Peop...

Semantics, I don't consider an armourer a commoner, esp. one in the Lord's household. Neither would he in period. He is an artisan. Maybe you need pictures to help you. If you look like the people in the bottom picture on this pyramid, get off of your arse and make yourself a proper set of garb. Oh...

My reason for asking is that in Lovat of Frasers, we've decided to hold off on having anyone portraying a any of the actual nobility of the household and instead portray the people of the household, from the armourers to the tenant farmers. There's quite a large scope there and one that can give any...

Compromises: Now here's an idea. Over here, as many of you will know, the problem with putting on a large-scale event in Scotland is that there are too many of the 'tartan tat' brigade who'll want to turn up. So if I was putting on an event such as Harlaw (1411), I'd wan to invite the groups that do...

Geln, a couple of years ago I took part in a fight that really was a pantomime - the group running it had decided that they had to be on the winning side (I have more time for groups who will put on a show where they lose) and we had them and their leader stalking the field hitting people at random,...

I notice a bias towards "the public" in a lot of the posts on this topic; some folks seem to think that displaying for the public is the goal of their activities. For many of us it is NOT! You may want to ask yourself---would your group still exist if the public was banned from any of your events? ...

Something we've been thinking of in the group (Northern Alliance) is how about an event where we portray an event such as siege, but instead of the usual "at 2pm we form up to fight" have the event running all day. This way we can show the full range of weapons being used, we can also have small sk...
