Ulrich de Huss

Hello, I've recently stumbled onto a picture of part of an effigy that has since been identified as that of Ulrich de Huss (Or Ulrich von Huss, or Ulrich de Hass), on display in Musee Unterlinden, Colmar, France. The effigy is apparently from around about 1345-50. Has anyone got any more information...

Yeah, the exact same helm (the cutouts might not be identical) but the one I am thinking of was high-polished stainless. That would be this one: http://progsoc.org/~rhoward/public/pics/armour/helms/roundtop/1186-583_helm.jpg Here's my own version of it (no fluting, went for the more common high-dom...

Two holes at one end, and two split ends at the other. The two smaller straps slip through the holes and tie.

Re: What makes for a good practice in your area?

How often does it happen -- week/month? Once a week. Who comes and roughly how many show up? A bunch of people ranging from first-week newbies and younger people, to the older regulars. Who teaches? Is instruction given, or is it a bash session, or both as needed? Mostly a bash session. A couple of...

When it comes to helmets, don't buy cheap ones from India, you'll only probably end up getting burnt.

Most of the ones you see in that gallery are 18 gauge, hencing making them illegal for SCA combat, and ill-advised for anything else (... besides maybe LARP).

*Performs the rite of thread necromancy* Does anyone know what period the Santa Giustina statue (shown in the first post) is supposed to represent, or when it was carved? The helmets in period I'm attempting to recreate seemed to be either plain metal or painted colourfully, though, so I'm opting to keep it as it is.

Fencing and karate here. Both _really_ help with my footwork, distance, and keeping track of what the person in front of me is doing without having to look directly at them.

(Admittedly I'm non-SCA, but it's still relevant enough. ;) )

If the back plate isn't period, have you thought about hidden armour at all? Take Hugh's DA kit, with the knee and elbow pads. Maybe a kidney belt to go under the mail & aketon might do the trick.
