Thanks for the support everyone. I do enjoy working on the tutorials 'cause it gives me a break from hammering but it is still work related so I can justify the time sitting down :) The best I have found so far is the dishing dough nut Dishing dough nut? What did I miss while I was away? What is it...

Regarding drill presses, I still use the cheapest Craftsmen made that my wife (then girlfriend) bought me as a present about 15 years ago. I think you can still get them for about $100 new on sale. I've used and abused it for just about everything. It's strong enough to easily outdo the Makita, but ...

I just bought mine today. I signed up for their email coupon program and got a nice 20% off one Monday. Then I checked their online price, which is $79.99, down from $99.99. So I walked into the store with both printouts, and they rang it up for $64! I got the idea from a previous HF shear thread he...

Thank you Denomyar, That does not work with all the welding clamps holding the panels in place. The panel metal has a spring factor in accordance with the bands... if you can hold it in place then heat it up to about 900 degrees F. it relaxes... and everything has no spring.... This also will give ...

I really like the site and it offers alot of good information on making all of the pieces that go into full harness. I think the site is for display suits, though, that is not a suit meant to be worn. If this satisfies your goals, you're good, if not, I think he (Mike) mentions the main areas where ...

Hal, You mention you shake too much. This is also a common TIG problem. The thing to realize is that all shaking is not equal, and you can control it to an extent. It is not uncommon for professional TIG welders of the more difficult welds to only weld in the morning, or only during a certain window...

Hal, I had the same problem when I was learning to TIG weld aluminum. A trick I was taught by an accomplished welder was to hold the tip significantly farther away from the weld than you would think, say hold the tip .500-.625 away from the work when welding 14-16 ga. You may have to increase shield...

Just some comments about the ringlord rings since that is what you asked. The ends come nicely sheared like // not the >< when you cut your own with a pinch type cutter (diagonals), so you can get really nice closures with them, with little effort. I made a coif with their 16 ga 1/4 rings in aluminu...

Or, you could do what I did... Use the crappy one, complain bitterly the entire time, create goodies to sell, save the money for a good one. I am a firm believer in using the money I earn to upgrade my tools... Thorfinn I suspect in the end that is what I will have to do. Can anyone suggest how I c...

I have a scrap source for 430 stainless in 18ga. I was thinking about making gauntlets out of it, and at $1.00 a pound with a polished and low scuffed surface. Do you think I should go get the lot or does 430 not work good for armour? I have never used it. If you look up the alloy in the link I gav...

If you really want to play with stainless and hardening, you will want to educate yourself with some google research. As mentioned, the 300 series doesn't harden by heat treating, but can by cold working. That's the main reason people say it is so hard to work into armour. Perhaps the most common he...

I alway make a conscious effort to think, "if things were to slip right now, where would I go?" if the answer involves sharp objects impacting your body, you may want to adjust yourself, or your work accordingly. Installing a metal roof has the same kind of problems. I eventually got some gloves wit...

Just recieved two 'raising' hammers from hammersource: Qty:1 P18701-0375 13oz Silversmith's Chasing Qty:1 P17501-0500 18oz Grooving hammer Both are Picard brand. I have noticed that the 'grooving hammer' has a very slightly conCAVE profile in the long axis on both faces. Is this ok for a raising ham...

Soft Anvils
OK, so I went and bought the HF 110lb russian steel anvil, basically because it is the only anvil shaped thing I'm likely to afford for a long time. After grinding the surface flat (it came with a bad fly cut surface), I 'tested' it and it is, of course, dead soft. It very easily dents. So my questi...

I'm curioius to know what people think I should charge for a set of these, were they sized for an adult. Specs would be 16 and 18 ga mild steel, etched brass trim, carved rivets, all leather straps grommeted and attached. I would probably modify the straps as suggested to have the arm strap lower, a...

Welding chrome steel balls
OK, after making the spaulders, I've got the bug, and want to make more. So I'm looking at a getting a raising hammer, and buying/making some ball stakes. The question I have is on welding ball bearings. It seems that all the large ones are "chrome steel", and the info I find is that this is very di...
