Re: Welding tips for enclosed thumbs on gauntlets?
I was trying this with long quick weld lines. Little-tacks would probably be a much better idea, and give the heat places to go. I'll try standing it straight up next time, too. I had it sitting upright at about 45 degrees. My mig welder's low setting is for 18-22 ga. steel. Even then, it seems to ...

Re: Female fighter body armor question
Lamellar is effective protection. A plastron works fine as hidden armour. Barrel plastic lorica whatevers are going to be like nuclear waste: they'll never leave the environment and they'll always be toxic. But doing things bassackwards is the SCA way. Carry on.

Re: Female fighter body armor question
I'm co-piloting this armoring. Being a woman I'm a tad less worried about the female body armor and have been wearing a standard male breast plate since I started with the sole exception being that it is a little more bent to shape properly. We are not using segmentata, we just haven't found any ot...

Re: Female fighter body armor question
Well, up to now we've been dealing with the key being cheap armor, mostly barrels. So things like lamellar aren't too feasible. Right now we are doing everyone in a Lorca style plate, but we were discussing about other designs, hence why the question started. If money and materials and time weren't...

Re: What patterns do people want to see in a pattern archive
Hey, welcome back. :) I've got a pattern for hourglass gauntlets, but they've got fingers, not mittens shaped like fingers. Thank you, kind sir. I'd love to see your pattern. I'm most interested in the cuff and metacarpal. I can probably fake the fingers. Also I can weld now, getting my degree in m...

I've been asked to teach on occasion. I will lead the student as far away from the fighting area as possible and maybe have five minutes to cover the info they need before some yahoo comes and takes over unasked.
It is asinine.

There is a very readable book called The Botany of Desire that gives an interesting history of the interaction between humans and apples, potatoes, tulips and cannabis. I highly recommend it.

Re: 14oz Linen or 16oz Hemp for a CoP?
I'm planning on covering both sides of the CoP as some others have mentioned. Granted, I might be over-building with this weight but I wanted the durability of leather without the cost, leatherworking tools, etc. There is really no need to cover the interior. It will add extra weight and add extra ...

Re: A better riveted mail standard, ideas?
Audax, OK, I have had a few hours to think about this. Is is that you are asking how a mail standard would be attached to, or integrated with a rigid of semi rigid defense, in order to make it SCA legal? I would make a spring steel "dog collar" that hinged in the front, and closed in back with a lo...

Here is the standard I spoke of earlier. I made the collar and the hollow of the throat of slightly denser mail, but it is really not dense enough to make a difference. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-inlO_dRv1Do/TqGotiURTTI/AAAAAAAAAMo/2FGfwjHMskM/s400/SDC14608.JPG If anyone is interested, I ca...

Should be very little shrinkage if you use the soak and bake method. There is a bazuband pattern in the pattern archive that is adaptable to leather. You will have to adapt it a bit and make your own tweaks.

Re: Is there a "NO PLASTIC. PERIOD" Movement in the SCA?
I don't have the same problem with plastic that some people do. Unfortunately, most plastic gets poor treatment in the SCA and just looks bad. Here is my caveat- if the plastic weighs the same, and has the right shape, I really don't have issue with it. Plastic CoP's, cuisses, etc, all covered with...
