Re: Vinegar soak to remove hot-roll steel scale

The vinegar soak works well on 1050 and 4130 after heat treating also.

How does it compare in thickness to regular old poster board?

I usually deal with him through eBay and have had no issues. With eBay it keeps record of all the messages sent back and forth, and his seller rating is important.

In case you weren't familiar, medieval armourers would often make miniature armours as a showcase of their skill. Very cool.

It would be a lot easier in spring steel or mild steel. The stainless just work hardened too quickly.

Here is another item I am selling for my friend who is getting out of SCA fighting. These are 16th Century Mitten Gauntlets made of 18g stainless steel. These gauntlets are very well made. I would keep them for myself if I did 16th century. I do not know what armourer made them. I don't know if they...

F/S: XL Stainless Helmet $250 PRICE REDUCED

I am selling this helmet for a friend who has decided to hang up his swords due to age. The helmet is 31 1/2" outside circumference at the brow, so it's made for someone with a very large head. The helmet is 14g stainless and has a very slight back point like a very low profile bascinet. I do not kn...

I made these Wisby demi-gauntlets for a friend, and they turned out a few ounces heavier than he wanted. They are approximately 18 ounces each. New, never used. The back of hand and the thumb plate are .050 (18g) 4130. The cuff plates are .040 (20g) 4130. All hardened and tempered. Plates are mounte...

Re: opinions on finger gauntlets for combat.

I think Gruber touched on something that's very important. No matter what style of gauntlet you decide to go with, make sure they fit your hands! I would wager that misfitting armour is responsible for a majority of the injuries in our various combat organizations.

Re: Horton Brass and Icefalcon stainless vervelles?

Sean, I helped a friend use the Horton brass fitting for vervelles on a bascinet. We used the PRT-28. As predicted, they are a slightly brittle but we cut them to length, and peined them like any other and they have held up pretty well. That particular model has a machine screw attachment, so the sh...

Re: torch with gas saver

Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting the annoying "pop" out of the gas saver. I've found that the slowly dying flame is actually a bigger issue because it's the gas burning back into the torch head/handle. I learned this one day because I had one that seemed to be taking a long time to go out, ...

Re: Heat Treat Kiln Advice / Help Needed

Just curious, what are you using it for at the higher temp? I have a large Knight kiln and mine is the same as yours. I turn all 6 knobs to high and i'm up to heat treating temps in less than an hour. I've never pushed past those temps though.

Re: Metal geeks.... Any way to identify a particular alloy?

Could be a 10-series spring steel. All of the 4130 I have has the alloy and thickness printed on the metal. My 1050 and mild steels are not printed.

Re: FU$%#$@@ ocular

My experience has been to make the helmet as if it were going to be worn in a period style, i.e. without a bar grill, and then adapt the bar grill to fit the finished helmet for SCA. The only real caveat to that is to allow enough room for the nose to appease the marshals, however I've never had a p...

Re: difference between 1074 and 4130?

What temperatures are you guys using to heat treat 4130 for best results on armour? I've been MIG welding 4130 with regular old MIG welding wire without any issues, but I also didn't know that I could get 4130 specific wire. What happens if you try to weld mild steel with 4130 wire? I don't want to ...

Re: Helmet Heat Treating Photos

The way I do it I bring the piece up to the finish I want first, heat treat, and then use a white vinegar soak for several hours to remove the scale. Of course, I rarely bring anything up past a satin finish, so after the vinegar soak I go straight to a fine wire wheel.

FS: Barrel Helmet 12g Mild Steel $150 Free Shipping CONUS

This is a 12g mild steel barrel helmet I made over 10 years ago that's been sitting on my shelf ever since. It's time to get rid of it, and replace it with a better one. This helmet isn't perfect, but it's a tank. Roughly 28" around the base, and slightly larger around the brow. $150 includes shippi...
