Re: new fighting vid. nothing special

There's only so much I can suggest for goofy foot fighters, but: 1. Neither one of you use your hips to throw blows. Sometimes your body gets behind a blow because you step, but not most of the time. 2. Neither one of you throws an offside leg blow, while both of you are open to being hit by it. Thi...

Re: Need help figuring out how to fix my shield grip.

I'm not known for being shy with my opinion, so I'll say right away that many of the shields in the SCA, and even in this thread, are hung terribly . If your hand does most of the work, it's wrong. If there is any single point of failure, it's wrong. If your elbow isn't VERY close to the center of b...

Best way to encourage upgrades to tents

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. The best way I know of to encourage people to upgrade from any mundane tent is to camp in full sun, in summer, with no trees around. Unless someone loves getting up every single morning a few minutes after dawn, they will lust for white canvas very quickly. h...

I was very disappointed this ended up conflicting with some war point due to the rain earlier in the week, or something running late. I forget. But I remember I was fighting when it went on.

Armored town, short bridges, woods

The armored town battle was as dumb a battle I've ever been in that didn't require us to move haybales in armor or build some dumbass thing. Notably, every single time it was run, the battle turned out just the way anyone who could rub 10 brain cells together would have guessed it would. This strik...

Re: Getting rid of 'fighter funk'

Prevention is key. All my hard gear except my helmet, gauntlets and knees is leather. Oh and gamboised cuisses. I use three bags for my gear: Wash Every Week Bag AKA clothing. This stuff goes directly to the laundry bin after fighting. At Pennsic, it gets hung out to dry on tent ropes. Anything that...

Don't add weight

Many of the examples/thought experiments above make one error: they add some amount of not-insignificant weight to the rod. Shrink tubing is overkill. Making an extruded formed rod with a shaped base that's more than 1.25" will make the rod REALLY HEAVY. People who like light swords already think th...

Re: Getting rid of 'fighter funk'

Every bit of my hard kit besides my helmet and gauntlets is leather. Some of my leather gear is over a decade old. Until this past Pennsic, some of it was nearly TWO decades old. It still smells like leather, not funk. I have never had to spray it with anything to knock the smell down. That's because...

They are legal without cops.

Depending on how big your knees are of course. I have skinny knees, so does Johann. You might need to add some side protection.

My Answer Alphas have a bit of sole bend added, covering the top of my fibula, for example.

It would be useful if you would discuss specifically how successful you have been with this form. The proof is in the pudding. Does using it to convince people you deserve a belt qualify? Of course it would. But I intended my comment for the Original Poster, not you Sir. Apologies if you thought so.

I'm now using something else. I found the Alpinestars had two big drawbacks: Uncomfortable to kneel in. Relatively fragile. I'm currently wearing these: http://delaflamme.org/another-option-hidden-knee-armor Which are MUCH more comfortable, though I needed to add to my previously cosmetic gaiter to ...

Maybe I haven't put credit where credit is due. In my experience, Duke Hrangvaldr of the Middle is the first guy I ever saw fighting sword leg forward, basket on leg, shield on head.

For brevity, I refer to the style as Oscar the Grouch.

Sadly, Mikhail the Armorer, who made my gauntlets to order 15+ years ago, is no longer with us. There are some pics of my gauntlets somewhere here on the archive. Re: Clam vs. finger gauntlets

I would never trust my hands to finger gauntlets. But then I'm a very forward pole arm fighter. I've been wearing the same pair of clamshells for 15 years or so, and had I been wearing finger gauntlets for that time, I'm pretty sure I would have broken 4 or 5 fingers. If I had insisted on finger gau...

Re: Do Outlanders still fight only in gambesons?

Sir Corby de la Flamme of Atlantia has used an aketon as his principal body armour for some time. It's packed tightly and serves him very well. It's sewn as a series of pockets, then each pocket is stuffed with cotton or linen batting, IIRC. Not exactly. it's tubes that were stuffed after sewing, a...

Re: Shot speed training / Training device

Haven't watched the video yet, but wanted to chime in on Apparent Speed. Apparent speed is also increased by delaying the moment when the tip of the sword begins moving in its final arc for as long as possible. Same reason why boxers don't throw haymakers--big, open, arcing shots have easy to predic...
