Re: Hussar wings in SCA combat
Take it to the Cut & Thrust field, where we'll all love you. Also, in the Midrealm, I think you'll have a lot less trouble than in some other kingdoms. The fighting style here will not be particularly hampered by wings. Also-also, I think you should consider building the frames for the wings ...

Re: Ken's Custom Iron "Quick / Rapid Tongs"
Love them. Own several. I used to despise making tongs with a burning passion, and I typically hate "legacy" tongs as used-up hunks of junk. But as Mac suggested, this takes enough of the hassle out of the process that I'll go ahead and make the right tool for the job. I don't know what category of ...

Nice! If I can offer a suggestion for your channel: people aren't just looking for instructional content, they're looking for content . A handful of build videos (with or without narration) are better than the perfect instructional video. And given how varied the challenges are on every different pr...

You should know those finger rings won't be functional. You can't reach around the small side loops the way they are. You'll need a much wider loop to do any good there.

Yes, but I don't know how durable it is. I wasn't trying to do it, it was incidental to other stuff I was doing. But yes, I have seen stainless blacken under a polymerized oil finish.

Destichado, what are your favorite images of a bycocket in the latter half of the 15th century? I tend to think of it as most common in a 14th or early 15th century setting, but I think there are exceptions. I just can't put my finger on them right now. You've got me thinking. :D Oh goodness no, it...

Like a besegew? They didn't forget how to make those you know. Besides, it's up too high for that, and if that were its purpose you would expect its shape to be inverted.
I think it's simply a practical innovation that became fashionable.

The Tiger and the Dragon measured themselves against their children (and allies), and found themselves perfectly matched. On the Rapier side (Midrealm) I was very pleased with the courtesy and calibration of the fighting. Atypically for my kingdom, I actually enjoy a good stiff shot, but I've been f...

That's very insightful.
I just tried that out on a few of my own swords, and I think you're on to something there. I think I'll pass this on to a few folks who know more than me, and figure out what characteristics (other than, "good sword!") we're actually measuring with this test.

When I started 16 years ago in the Middle -right around when Rittermark did- I was somewhat less than impressed with most of the armor on the field. Not all! Baron Connel in particular had an awesome 14th century tourney kit at the time, and was one of the best looking on the field locally. A lot of...

Re: New toy! Talhoffer buckler, c. 1465
Finally uploaded some build pictures. I started out with a 16 ga shield blank dished lightly to give it some structure, and welded a piece of 1/4" rod around the perimeter. That was pretty much a matter of torch work, tacking it down, more torch work, more tacking, etc. And then I TIG'd it in two pa...

The plastic barrel will not crack.
Can you cap your barrel? If so, fill it to the brim and cap it off. You won't have a bit of problem.

I've done Corazinna back-plates in the oven. I use Kydex rather than HDPE and I run a little cooler than you do. I usually have to flex the back-plate to get it into my oven... but that's OK as it's going to flex anyway on shaping. I also don't do a 2nd heat repolymerization step since I've been ge...

Re: Easybake Armor: The Sculpted Plastic Armor Project
That's true (and I didn't want to say so), but it's also not quite as bad as you might think. You're not dealing with steel, you're dealing with hot taffy-like plastic. If you really wanted to, and you were clever, you could simply sculpt the desired armor piece you want in clay , directly on top of...

Random thought, but with your cop setup, what if you were to extend the clamp for the shaping pieces further out and mount them on hinges? Might help with ease of production, stretch the plastic and just flip the clamp over and set your screws. Heeheehee. But if you do that, you'd have to mount you...

at about off gassing? Any dangers in having 350 degree plastic & plywood in your oven? Nope, the polymer is totally stable at that point. You will not have issues until the mid 600s F, and most ovens cannot achieve those temperatures. From the standpoint of HDPE, this is totally safe. It's a non-is...
