Re: Format of Armour Patterns
I'd like to thank you Craig for allowing a few of us newer armourers to use your patterns. One of my first projects was your basinet and I have to admit that I learned alot about how metal moves, how to planish, polish and assemble. I wouldn't have been able to do that without a starting point... to...

Re: Viking Leathercrafts review.
I recently purchased a pair of 13th century shoes, which I'm very happy with. I'm alway leary about buying things with sizes online, so I asked a bunch of questions and they were answered very promptly. OK Frank... answering questions at midnight is a little extreem, get some sleep man :-) For these...

Re: SCA-Bargrill Jig?
The person that I was going to have weld the stainless is a friend of mine that does welding for a living. I won't have to send it anyplace, but I though it would be nice if he could weld it on his own time and not have me holding each piece. I did buy a spool of .030 stainless wire for my mig welde...

Re: SCA-Bargrill Jig?
When you say "I'm not able weld stainless at my shop" this insinuates that you can weld other things. Why not stainless? If you have a welder, have you determined you actually can't do it? Sorry I should have been more clear. I have a small Craftsman wire feed mig welder (85amp) with a Argon/CO2 ta...

SCA-Bargrill Jig?
Greetings All, I'm wonding if any of you use a jig or have any tips for holding bargrill pieces prior to welding. My dilemna is that I'm helping a friend make a grill out of stainless, however I'm not able weld stainless at my shop. Thus I will be bringing all the parts elsewhere for welding. At thi...

Jantien, this is very nice work! I've been researching this piece for several months and have been compiling articles from different books and research, people have done. Since paint has a tendency chip/flake off after a few good whacks... we started baking on several coats of paint. Use your paint of choice (like previously suggested) and bake it in the over over low heat 180-200 for about 20 minutes. Repeat... 2 or 3 more times. This really helped to reduce the wea...

Your site is very professional looking and is clean and easy to read. Personally I'm not a huge fan of drop down menu's, but would rather see pictures... My preference would be to click on "Leg Armor" and see pictures pop up of the two subcategories. Then click on the subcategory to get further info...

The bead of weld would actually be completely hidden on the inside, then ground down. It probably only needs to be extended about 1/4" and about 1" long. It just needs something to stop it from over extending. Making a new piece is a possibility, but I would like to investigate other options too. Th...

Lame Extension?
Greetings all, I've been asked to see if I can do a quick repair on a set of steel arms a friend of mine purchased. These are full arms, with 4 lames plus the elbow. The problem is that one of the lames may have been cut a little to short, so when you bend your arm tightly, the lame will sometimes p...

Very nice indeed.... Forgive my ignorance, but I have a quick question regarding SCA requirements for the bargrill (picture 1). In helm construction it requires steel/iron rivets no more than 2 1/2" apart. Does this requirement also include the attaching surface of a bargrill?? It looks like you may...

I would have creased the front and back straps, but it looks pretty good! You know I thought about doing that.... Greetings All, Over the past few months I've been helping a young lady in our group to create a modified Spangen style helm with a face plate. The helm was created with the attempt to prevent some of the stress from TMJ (lockjaw), due to the type of chin strap system she was using. This helm will ha...

Greetings All, Cat's thread on etching really got the ideas flowing (thanks Cat, just what I needed was one more project) I have a couple of questions for those of you that have done different types of etching. 1) What type of metals can actually be etched by using the RadioShack solution. For detailed work, another option is GALAXY MARKERS by American Crafts. They are primarily used for scrapbooking, however they work great on leather. About 6 months ago I did some research regarding the punch/die sets for the RW #7, 7 1/2, 8 and WA #2. For new Round sets the price was approx. $25 per set, for oval or squares the price was between $45-70 per set. I got real lucky on ebay and pick up 14 new round sets for about half the price of ne...

Julio, Nice test... One other thing you might want to try on a future test is to suspend the sandbag & maille. By doing this, it will give you a better idea as to how much of the arrow impact will move a body. The arrow is more likely to go through a solid target verses a standing target that can be...
