For sale - 3 basket hilts for $50 plus shipping

The first basket hilt is from Dark Victory Armory. It's their powder coated guard that's listed for $35 on their site. Mine is in new shape but with some slight surface rust on the bolts and some dust from storage. It'll clean up in about five minutes. The measurements are about 4.75" tall, 6.25" wi...

When I was in Spain in ther early '70's the common method of lighting a cigarette was with a little flint and steel set up much like a bic lighter except it used a piece of machero cord in a small metal tube to catch the sparks in it's charred tip. To put it out you pulled the cord down into the tu...

Thomas, same in Portugal, cheap lighters, a red braided cored wick, presumably rpimed with salt petre. Someone used to sell these things. I think they're called a shepherd's lighter or something like that. I thought it was Track of the Wolf but I can't find them on their site now. IIRC you char the...

Sorry - I realize this may be of no use at all, that's just what I thought when I first looked at them.

Late medieval references point to 'old cloth' as a tinder, that is not necessarily charred, but I tried fluffing up some knackered linen, of which you get a lot of after underwear has become unusable, but as yet could not get a spark to make it glow. Old linen cloth was an important ingredient for ...

I love flint and steel - something about it just fascinates me. I'm not sure how period charcloth is for before the industrial revolution. All cloth before that would have had to been made by hand which is very labor intensive, and I'd think that they would have wanted to use cloth to the point wher...

Munition grade Ironmonger bascinet, basket hilts for sale

After over a year of having this helm and not even getting it strapped, it's painfully obvious to me that I'm not likely to get into SCA combat in the near future. I'm keeping my bow but I'd like to sell this helm to help fund an anvil. Same story with the basket hilts. The details - Ironmonger Muni...

Thanks. I've been talking it over with hjalmr even before this but I was concerned that 16 gauge may be too light. I've heard horror stories about a guy wearing a 16 gauge helm that often had to be pried off of his head and hammered back into shape after every practice session. And I like my wrists,...

My Dark Victory hilt showed up last week some time and I have to say, I'm not too worried about it. The welds are smooth and seem solid and there really isn't even any slag or rough spots. I don't have it mounted yet but overall, it seems pretty well made.
No worries with it at this point.

Anyone know where I can find some good steel demi-gauntlets?

Pretty self explanatory. I'm thinking of going with a set from hjalmr but before any final deals are struck, I just figured I'd see if anyone had any other suggestions. I'm looking for something that is protective and well made but I don't need anything fancy - plain is fine with me. Also, It's been...

Ironmonger Armory can probably make what you want. I just got a munitions grade bascinet from him a little over a month ago and it's very well built. Also, for awhile I wasn't sure it was going to fit right. I think I have that issue sorted out now but he offered a couple times to take the helm back...

WTB - some leather scraps

Anyone out there have some decent sized leather scraps you'd be willing to part with? I'm looking for something to make a coin/utility pouch out of. I'd prefer something in a dark brown shade. Or maybe some kind of spotted calf skin if possible. Been looking on ebay and have some prospects but I fig...

Well they are fairly cheap.
I have a cold steel hawk that seems pretty solidly made and has held up well to throwing.
Not much good for anything other than a weapon but I imagine it would do pretty well for that one thing.

I got into looking for some coins not too long ago too, figuring that they'd be great for adding a little medieval flavor. I am just at the beginning of getting my armour together and will hopefully (but maybe not) be able to fight at Pennsic this year... with a lot of luck. That's a relief. I can deal with "rough" - a few minutes with a file isn't a huge deal to me and I already have some loc-tite to deal with loose screws if need be. But if the welds were weak... that would be bad. Still, I kind of wish I had just gotten one from Ironmonger now. May wind up still doin...

I just got a helm from Ironmonger that seems to be pretty solid. If worse comes to worse, I'll probably wind up trying him for a basket too.

OK - not to be dense, but how exactly in the leather gauntlet/strap combo going to work? Will it provide enough protection on its own or would I need to add steel to the glove? WTB - basket hilt and a shield basket

Pretty much says it all - I'm looking for a good basket hilt and a shield basket. Honest wear and surface rust don't concern me any as long as we're talking about solid equipment. If you happen to know a maker who can supply me I'd be interested in that as well. Last, if you have a couple good ones ...

Well I went to see a man about my helm today - actually my first face to face meeting with any real live talking SCA person.
His advice was
1. The helm is well made.
2. Skip the glasses for now or pony up the $$ for prescription safety goggles.

So... I think I'm going to follow his advice.

Anyway, the maker has now suggested that I return the helm and that I supply him with some improved measurements.
