Pittsburgh, you say? If you are able to make the BMDL practices on Sundays (the park at Washington Blvd/Allegheny River Blvd intersection, near Highland Park), you will find a number of us interested in this kind of thing. Here is a link to the practice location. http://www.debatablelands.org/fight_...

The contact info is correct. That is my former squire sister and thankfully not-so-former wife. :) There is a lady in Aethelmearc who does this, and teaches it also. Her name is Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen. She does a beautiful german persona. She always looks like a perfect Nuremberg Woman, hair...

When I started my path into period techniques, some friends and I picked up Capo Ferro and attempted to figure out what all those strange poses really represented. Since a sword fight involves at least 2 people, I found you need at least 2 people involved in this kind of thing to get really useful i...

AEthelmearc has an Agincourt event every year. It is in the BMDL (Pittsburgh area) and well attended. You may consider coordinating with the AE event autocrat to have some sort of tie-in between the 2. The autocrat for the event is the current BMDL Baron, Liam (Uilliam Mac an tSaoir) and his email, ...

Greetings, I fight SCA in a burgonet from Illusion, and have no problems seeing the field. I have as much vision as with any other style of helm I've used over the years. There are pictures of me in it earlier in this thread. Hi, this thread has been very helpful, though its a lot to read. I am an S...

Greetings, I purchased a Del Tin from Darkwood before they started producing their own blades. The balance is nice for my fighting style, and I have never had one issue with the blade, so I would put Del Tin blades (now sold through Kult of Athena, a good company) right at the top for quality along ...

For a stainless helm, I second the Illusion burgonet. I have the one with hinged cheeks and love it, love it, love it. Depending upon time of year, 6-9 month wait time sounds correct. Greetings, The 32" blade would be more of a "specialty" item in my view than the 35. I can't say what will work best for you (as we've never met let alone anything else) - however for the vast majority of people it will be a point of frustration using a short blade while learning the basics. The sam...

I can't emphasize enough the posts by people who say to go to a number of practices to see what works and what you like. With their owners' permission, pick up and try every single weapon you can. Each one will tell you how it wants to work, and if you two can get along. After 10 years, I still have...

As long as you have the required coverage in the correct areas, you can wear most anything else you want. So you could wear clothing from about any time pe...

I have heard of some linen fencing gear falling apart from being sweated in too much. All of my rapier armor is linen or linen and wool. Like any clothing material, linen will wear with age. Nothing lasts forever. The first linen rapier armor I had lasted roughly 4 years before I declared it dead. ...

I'd like to see that. I've always disliked using one portrait of one person as evidence for something like this. My solution for everyday wearing (I don't want to tie them properly, because I cheat and wear modern underwear) is to tie my hose up to a small strip of cloth, IE a belt, around my waist. I also wear garters to keep the hose looking nice and form-fitting below the knee. When I fence I wear modern on...

I'm not sure about ponytails. Personally, I only like my hair either buzzed or long, and I've worn it both ways for years at a time. It's just that you would not see a proper gentleman in the 16th century running errands around town wearing a breast plate and helm. Nor would they wear helmet or armor to a duel of honor. Again, not every fencer fits into this category. If I had my way, there would be a bunch of people interested ...

Afterall rapier is simulating civillian in town fights/defense not war. So you wouldn't be running around town wearing the same gear as on the battle field. Thankfully for those of us interested in historical fighting, not everyone fits into this box. You do bring up a good point, however. Historic...
