Crimson Forge / Wisby gauntlets
I wonder if anyone has heard from crimson forge lately? I tried e-mailing them, but the mails bounce. I am very interested in purchasing a pair of gauntlets from them, or, if they're down from another armourer who also tries to replicate the historical gauntlets as much as possible. Kind Regards /Ar...

Re: Issues with Anshelm order
Just to be clear, I have absolutely no problems with Black Swan, Windrose or Bohemund, in fact all my dealings with them have been handled very professionally. But according to what maxentropy writes, I ought to treat them like I've had a bunch of issues with them earlier, since they are operating w...

Re: Issues with Anshelm order
If you don't want to wait, don't order something from a craftsman who creates art. There are places where you can order manufactured goods with assured delivery, and places where you can buy "retail" off-the-shelf armor (paying "convenience"-type markups). I have used both, enjoy both, and believe ...

"Scandinavian Rus"?
I'm not sure what you mean. if you mean Scandinavian, then I'd suggest looking at the Vendel and Valsgärde gravesites, if Rus, Latvia and Estonia has a few interesting finds as well.

Thanks!
Yes, maille coif and the "loaf" on top.
Sadly, the coif has to go until I buy or make a new sugarloaf, the fit is just too tight

Timing in greetings are rather important. If you wave to me across the street, and I cross and extend my hand and you just look at it, you have already greeted me, but are you being polite?

Re: "Rude" Salutes
If he saluted hid opponent when his opponent salutes him, and whacks his helmet when the marshal asks if he is ready, he's being polite. Not returning his opponents salute but instead offering a "ready to fight" gesture in response is not being polite.

Re: Rude Salutes
I do it the same way every time I fight a tourney to insure that I am in the right mind for the melee. When the herald announces my opponent's name in the list, I level my sword, tilt my head down, and bow towards the fighter. At that moment I am giving my opponent the first acknowledgement in the ...

Why not?
If you are so vehement in your views why not have an event for those who think like you?

Was wondering that myself, II. How would expanding to fit just one more century under the massive time period already covered really be the salvation of the SCA? I honestly think that doing so would not bring enough people in to balance out the diminishing numbers caused by easier hobbies and the e...

Re: I think I have a fix for CA...
A question to Johnathan and Balin: Have you considered autocrating a "missile-free" War? It would be a great place for all those who dislike being shot at, and those who like to shoot or be shot at would know well in advance that they needn't be bothered with bringing their gear. Just a thought. We...

I disagree.
I think we lose our potential recruits to more historical societies. At least here in Europe. Going from Boffer to HEMA is a more natural transition than going to SCA.

Re: Rude Salutes
The video surprised me, I would not have felt "saluted" after that.
What I saw looked like a man who used the "salute" moment for pressing his "on" button. Now, my opponent is not obliged to salute me, it is just the polite thing to do.

Re: Fir and Pine for shields
I've made(still needs gesso and eggtempara though) a pretty close reconstruction of the Seedorf shield, that one has (probably) 2 layers of linden, and interestingly it is backed with rawhide as well. I used glued together linden planks, crossing them, so that they would be as sturdy as possible. I ...

Nice find! Also, in "Nickel, Helmut. (1958). Der mittelalter Reiterschild des Abendlandes. Thesis (Ph.D): University of Berlin." there are examinations of period shields. The seedorf shield for instance is linden, front and backed with parchment, padded on the back. it is painted with eggtempera on ...

Re: Fir and Pine for shields
There are no surviving examples of shield markings. The eagle's claw is my own device, but I've changed it so that it's a claw on red within white, no black now. There are however quite a few metal fittings in the shape of a raven from the Vendel(merovingian) age. http://mis.historiska.se/mis/sok/fi...

Re: Fir and Pine for shields
I decided to look into actual findings of viking shields: I chose the most well preserved finds: the Danish find in kongens borge, and the Latvian find in Tirsk. What we see here, is that a single row of wooden planks were glued together, and covered with leather. 85 cm in diameter, Pine planks, 8mm...
