Re: Break down benches?
In the early days of the Internet, I was searching for 'Viking chests'. And that's how I found a website about Miss Nude Scandinavia.

Beautiful! Just wondering whether you have a documentable source for the ones with a little loop at one end - eg a recorded archaeological find or period artwork?
Thanks

I was looking forward to a response, or at least an positive comment and maybe a donation from Sir Lucas. Regardless, this mission of mercy is almost done. Never again though. This was an educational but painful experience. Lucas's profile has him last visiting on Mon Aug 22, 2016 1:39 pm - the day...

Re: I Wanna Be a 11th C. to mid-12th C. Norman
Well, the "coif" is really the aventail of my helmet (for Chivalric Combat), so it doesn't work well if I had it under the surcoat (tucking it back under each time I put my helmet on), but I understand; really my persona would have been wearing a shirt with the coif integrated into the collar so th...

Looks good - I think the overall look would be great with the surcoat worn over the skirt of the separate coif (a pet issue).Owen Longstrider wrote:My SCA persona is an English Third Crusader (1190s), so I would have been wearing a gambeson, mail shirt, possibly mail chausses (leggings), and usually a conal helmet;

Re: New casting project
For small runs of pewter, I cast two plain slabs of plaster of paris and carve the design and sprue into them, just like a soapstone mould. It's easier because it's softer and even allows sharper detail. I've cast dozens from moulds like this and never really noticed any heat damage, though physical...

Re: Rare Viking Helm of unusual construction
I lean towards the view that the plates have been recycled from something else (whether 'in period' or by a more modern craftsman, well-meaning or otherwise). The joins between the plates don't look quite so bad from the outside. There are holes visible that are wider than the rivet shanks. Washers ...

Viking barley bagels: http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/vikbagels.html
"... the bagel shape is lifted directly from a Migration Era grave find"
Based on how hard my first batch turned out, I can believe that. They could have been used as loom weights. Kind of more-ish, though.
