Re: Is good armour asymmetrical?
Perfect symmetry is overrated. You'd be hard pressed to find a period piece of armour that is as meticulously labored over to the degree that many modern makers do in terms of making a true mirror image on either side.

Hello Marcos, If you have a gmail account, you should be able to access the pictures by just clicking on the link I posted. You should be able to look at the pictures as they are, but apparently there is some setting that requires my permission to "share" the album? I'm not sure why that is, but I'l...

Re: Met trip - picture requests?
Ok, I'm getting the itch again to head down to the Met. I just uploaded some photos of a previous trip and it makes me wanna go back... I'm headed down specifically to get some close-ups of the heavily chased and repousse'd pieces. I've taken a bunch of shots of what they had on other trips but I th...

Re: Prince-Elector Christian I of Saxony armour- in progress
I was going through my many pictures of the trips I've taken over to the Met (I live about a 2-hour train ride away) and I came across a bunch I'd taken of this very suit you're going for. I've uploaded them to my Google+ account, unfortunately you need a google account yourself to be able to view t...

Re: 2 days of mempo-ing in 4130 spring steel
Yup, Matt summed it up pretty nicely there
The reason I asked if it was for SCA was for that same reason. It seemed like a perfectly fine design compromise for the clearance requirements, but if that wasn't a concern then some tucking was needed. Good luck!

Re: 2 days of mempo-ing in 4130 spring steel
My one criticism would be that I think it looks super tall compared to the originals, especially the distance from the lip down to the chin. Most of the Japanese face protection I've seen have a shorter span from those points and tend to jut out quite a bit more. It looks like you should have enough...

Do you have any pictures of the sort of pieces you had in mind? I work in a shop that does a lot of custom cutlery and we'd be happy to check out a project with historical influence.

Where can one go to get the data on the thicknesses of different parts of historical pieces like this? Is there a fairly uniform thickness throughout or do they also have varying telltale areas?

Re: For those that have ventured into repousse in steel...
One of the best pieces of advice I've been given in terms of holding chisels / punches / little fiddly tools is to be mindful of how firmly you're holding them. The ideal I've found is to hold them only as firmly as necessary to keep them at the appropriate angle. There's a tendency to want to keep ...

Re: Jap helm mempo patterns thoughts ideas...
As with armour from any culture from any time period, the best thing you can do for yourself is spend a lot of time looking at pictures of the originals you're trying to emulate. These three here are probably a bit intense as examples but if nothing else you can see pretty clearly the ways the separ...

Normally I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to lie on the floor of a well-trafficked New York City building, but I already have plans for tomorrow. Re: Rivet sizes for gauntlets?
Well for starters, quick rivets (or sometimes I hear them called Jiffy rivets) are NFG for anything other than cheapo costume-grade stuff. If these rivets are going to be put on gear that is meant for SCA combat, I'd recommend either you or your friend download a copy of the Marshal's Handbook. Ther...

Clip the edges! Gawd, it's so simple. I've always wrestled with patterns that need to compress or expand in certain areas and, well... they just can't in a single sheet. I don't know why it never occurred to me to snip along edges to allow it to do just that. Thanks Mac, this little tidbit is going...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Personally, I think you made the right aesthetic choice. Having three large lames that are at least visually identical in size just seems.. clunky to me. Little to no variation in dimensions among those lames comes off as somewhat mechanical to me. I really like the revised version.

Re: That thing you do with metal
Damascening, from what I understand, doesn't require any channels to be carved deeply into the surface. Simple scoring the surface with a very hard blade-like tool provides enough texture for the soft metals like gold and fine silver to "grab" onto. India has their own version - koftgari. The proces...

Hal's got it down pat. If you keep your heat source right on it until the color you want shows, you've gone too far. Also, I can't understate the importance of NO FINGERPRINTS or oil of ANY kind on the surface. It will stick out like a sore thumb and there's nothing to be done about it except refini...
