I don't expect the punches or O2 concentrators to still be available, but I can hope :) Yeah the shipping cost on the conc...

Re: I'm done, and selling some nice stuff

More bits and bods and unfinished projects. All in one photo: Steppe-style spangenhelm. Needs rethinking, probably a new skirt. The bowl is worth keeping at least, and that cap is formed nicely. I think it would fit about 20-22" head. $30 Arms made (and abandoned mid-project) by Tom Justus. They are...

There is almost nothing about constructing armor which is going to contribute to or prevent your learning heat treating. If anything, once you start playing ...

If you don mind heat treating 17-7ph stainless steel then this surplus company has lots of 0.025" 17-7ph SS for sale cheap. Hey thanks for this tip! It looks like 17-7 is easier to weld but is more difficult to heat treat? Do you play with it? Do you have heat treat process? 'Cause 410 is pretty de...

Re: workbench math question on size.

I have a small space, 10x20, and not only is it for armoring, but wood tools have started moving in, too. I've come to the opinion that for armoring, I want as little horizontal area as possible. I have a large table, about 30" deep, 6' long, about elbow height when I stand up, with a drill press on...

Yeah I forgot to mention onlinemetals... What I don't get is, McMaster is not generally known as the budget option for ANYTHING, and yet they sell 410 sheets for way less than anyone else. I have this idea that if McMaster sells 0.029 for around $9 a square foot, I should be able to find thinner she...

Anyone know where to get thin 410?

I want to make some scales. I want to do it with 410 because if you do a bad job cleaning it up after heat treating, it looks a lot like weathered mild steel. And I also don't want to deal with rusting scales. Problem is, the only place I've found that will sell me 0.025" (~24g) 410 stainless wants....

Re: Working armour hot with oxy acetylene.

Wiki's "Propene" entry claims you can use it to weld with an oxy/propene (propylene) setup, with a flame temp still over 2000 C though still a few hundred degrees C short of oxy/acetylene. It enjoys greater safety than O/A in use, being much less touchy in the tank. So, depending on what the end us...

If it's a piece that doesn't require a whole lot of complicated forming, then I'll sometimes just stick the completed piece on an anvil and flatten it back out and trace it. If it is a piece that requires a lot of forming, then I just spitball it and shave off what doesn't belong after I'm done hitt...

If I try this it will be as four separate pieces, because I rarely keep steel around in pieces big enough to trace out the whole thing.

On that note... how many times does the armoring community need to do this before you put out an idea for a backplate, Mac?

If the holes are all within 2" of the edge, then Corey's right and you should just get a punch. A proper punch made by RW (not the HF knockoffs) will last for at least hundreds of holes. If not.... consider a bit sharpener. I have a Drill Doctor and though it's not a precision machine, it gets bits ...
