Battle of the 30 (2005)
His Grace Alaric and I have developed tentative rules for this years battle, they remain the same as last year but add a provision that all gentles must be able to provide their own ransom as befits their rank and station. We are also looking at adding in a provision to extend the time period of the...

While I can not guarantee anything, we did find ourselves short of the 60 combatants last year. If people arrive in a good 14th century kit there is a possiblity that they may get to fight. Again, each captain has invited 30 individuals and if some of them are unable to attend there may be openings.

I have been using fiberglass resin and fiberglass fabric on wood shields for a long time and it holds up very well with out edging. I use 1/2 inch plywood so that may have something to do with the endurance. I do add a strip of leather around the edges of the shield, I attach it with rivets (actuall...

Garreth, You said: Do you fight in the full arms and legs and pauldrons? If so, how do they perform, do they affect your fighting at all? How's the weight and incumberance? I fight in the circa 1380 full arms and spaulders that Jeff makes. The only word that I have for performance is AMAZING. You ca...

I purchased a spring steel arm harness from Jeffrey Hedgecock at Historic in December of 2002, and the stuff is great!!!!! I use it to fight SCA heavy combat and it has held up very well. The historical accuracy is right on and the lack of weight has done wonders for my speed and stamina. It is amaz...

Does any body have some good resources that might cover what kind of armour they wore in what is now Poland during the last half of the 14th century?

Malcom, If I my interpretation of your comments is correct it looks like there may be two seperate issues? 1) Some people do not want combat archery to be used on the field. 2) Some people want to hurt the archers themselves or their equipment. While I agree that the first of the two is the case, I ...

teach said "I also feel that the potential of an archer or a siege operator being injured is very real. There is a " Get them of my field" attitude among some, and bows have been targeted." Jareth said "Unfortunately, he also has strong beliefs as to what the SCA 'should' be..." I find this argument to be rather ironic, seeing as the reason that combat archery exists now is because a group of people said "I should be allowed to play and the rest of you should have to suck it up and dea...

Here are pictures of the Rose Tourney that was held in the Middle Kingdom on June 1: http://www.houseargus.com/pages/gallery/events/rose_tournament_02_001.htm We banned cars from the site and put all not period pavilions behind the tree line. The tourney was fought with rules very similar to those a...

Two more questions: 1) What about butted and welded mail? 2) How will the "rank" of the individual be decided? What happens if 10 people show up with the kit of a knight and no one to act as retainers? I am not saying that it will happen but it is possible. ------------------ Phillipe de Pamiers Mid...

I think that the formation of a LH group for the 14th century is a great thing. I could see regional groups getting together for larger events. Training for Combat/Tournies
Vitus' comment on spending more time learning how to knock some one down with his lance got me thinking. SCA forms of address
I posted this on another forum but am curious what people on the AA think? It is my opinion that a persons title was a very big portion of who they were during the Middle Ages. However, in the SCA we tend to use more egalitarian forms of address with those of rank, instead of Earl Sir so and so it i...
