Re: Colored helmet bands

The Manese codex (14ht Century) shows lots of mantles, so I am going to infere that torses may have also been involved. And then there are lots of torses illustrated in the 15th century as well.

Colored helmet bands

I can't for the life of me remember what the spiral colored band that wraps around the brows of helmets is called, so first I am looking for a gentle reminder in that regard. Secondly, I am wondering if folks have ideas on how to make them? Are they one solid coloured tube with a second color wrappe...

I have to go buy some steel for my bar grill today. What is the minimum thinkness? 1/4"? "Bars used in the face guard shall be steel of not less than 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) in diameter, or equivalent. If the span between crossbars is less than 2 inches, 1/8-inch diameter bars may be used." An Tir Book o...

I have terrible luck trying to add photos. Can someone tell me how to get the picture to appear within the actual post? I have 3 photos, I just cant get them to load. I select the photo, hit the "add the file" button, get the pop up, and it never goes any farther than that.

I have been wanting a kettle helm for my mid 14th century Italian condottiere persona for a while now, as my sallet just doesn't work for the period. I have sought the advice of a couple very talented folks here on the archive on how to build one (Thank you MadMatt for your detailed information) but...

Here is my new buckler. I am pretty happy with the the belt hanger/ thumb brace especially. What type of combat do you plan on using your buckler for, because if it's SCA I see a huge thumb injury in your future.... Combat archery. Its for stopping arrows in box tournaments if I run out of arrows o...

Re: Kettle helms with integrated facial protection

I've seen free collar depcited with bacinets, motably in some of the movies about Aggincourt (sp?) Is anyone aware of some modern examples of those? Work has started on my kettle helm, and I would very much like to capture that look somehow.

Check the house, make sure there weren't any Lanisters hanging around. There is a strong correlation between the presence of Lanisters and falling children.

Re: Kettle helms with integrated facial protection

Yeah, The rubbing I was looking at upon further inspection looks like a great bascinet with a kettle helm on top. There is still the painting from Crecy, but in my earlier question, it was pointed out that the painting from the battle of Crecy was made a little after the fact (65 ish years). It does...

Re: Kettle helms with integrated facial protection- Answered

Yeah, that strikes me as being a bit later than I am thinking. What I have in mind is more of almost a bascinet back to the helm with a snow plow like lower face guard which is sometimes attached also to bascinets of the time. I'd attach picutres but am having trouble doing so at the moment. Turns o...

Kettle helms with integrated facial protection

Greetings, I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried to make or seen a modern recreation of a Kettle helm with a lower faceguard . I have seen them pictured in a picture painted representing the Battle of Crecy and a picture in Brian Prices Book on 14th Century armour. I am having a swanky new kettle h...

Help with hammer for inside helmets

I could have sworn at some point there were hammers posted on this forum that were used to pein rivets inside of helmets. So, I'm going to India in a couple weeks, and I wondered if it would be worth the time to try and track down any direct manufacturers to see if I could get some gear a little bit cheaper direct from the source. Painted helmets- How common were they?

Greetings. I am thinking of painting my next helmet rather than going with the snazzy polish job. I have seen a number of painted examples of 'black sallets', which I quite like, but I am thinking of a slightly earlier era, say hundred year war/ crecy. How common were painted helmets in that time fr...

The metal in the guantlets is 18 guage stainless. On the inside of the cuffs are 4 small plates just smaller than the cuff itself, held inplace with the rivets. Wisby Archer Gauntlets

Inspired by Wisby, these are the archer gauntlets I made for myself after it turned out the stainless ones were chewing up my crossbow. They work very well, helping me to my first box CA tourney win. I've also attached a couple shots of the rest of my rig. I've made everything you see. The sallet, t...

It would appear you have made the visor from 2 peices. Is it easier to get the concave curve of the lower visor bit that way?
