"my biggest beefs with counted blows is, you pay no penalty for allowing yourself to be hit. and it encourages leg and arm hunting" Yes you do take a penalty, you are down by one count. Arm and leg hunting is period, look at the norse sagas for instance you've got tons of references for people getti...

"How does St. Olaf, who have exceptional armour standards, deal with anachronistic weapons?" I'll try and answer that. We are doing tournamants, rebeats and battons so to speak. The weapons are assumed to be "arms of peace" so they aren't going to cut a shield anyway. We count blows and do not act o...

I really wasn't paying attention. Point is what ever you give anyone, your Knight, some newbie that needs help. D...

counted blows More representative of tourney, it also takes some of the advantages of certain weapon styles, evens out sword and shiels vs greatsword for ex. Plus it does'nt look stupid like knee fighting does, it doesn't cause knee problems like knee fighting does. There are no questions on "points...

I've dealt with this kinda stuff in the past. You are dealing with a guy that probably knows jack about armour and he's trying to fail you on purpose because you don't fight in the same junk as other people. Bring a copy of the rules with you, that way you can argue. If that don't work take them to ...

You think i'd be getting better by now.

Must train harder! Must become invincible!!

Course i'm obsessive. I'll slow down eventually, no _real_ job, no kids.

It is nigh impossible to get metalurgically (sp?) accurate to medieval metal for armour.

Use period designs, to get period appearence in a ferrous material. That seems the best we can do.

Talhoffer and Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship both have large sections on the use of the greatsword.

Al there is a web site, "No shield to hide behind" thats pretty good.

Greatsword is fun, be prepared to get hit alot and get some good pauldrons.
