It looks similar to Korean helmets, but I am unlearned in that subject and don't know if they used the mail drape. But my .02 would put it in that part of the world.

How about a metal appliqué to keep the rigidity and make it thinner. Might not work for you though since you are working with leather specifically. Just my wine induced 2c.

Yep, use the Roman stuff (hamata). A couple of folks make it in half punched. m carries it in 8mm and 6mm ring size. I can't find any info on their reputation. Has anyone ordered from them?
