you certainly can, with the restriction irish noted above.

whether or not it's a tactically sound idea given the rules and equipment of sca combat really is more of an open question :P

hmm. the Spirit of the thing, or the Thing itself.

I'd go with the cut-and-resew approach myself, both to get the putative look correct and because if they had blue jeans they would've worn them.

for giggles, it is sometimes informative to intentionally do that to a piece of whose composition you are unsure. Score a mark every 1 cm or so on a length of stock. Heat and quench to full hardness. Selectively heat one end and draw a temper along the length, but don't allow it to color past the fi...

Re: Need some help with an article I'm writing.

If you were to tell a newbie who knows nothing about metallurgy what kind of nails to buy at say HD for use as an armoring rivet, what should they look for? I'm writing an article on basic armor repair and when I go to Home Depot to look at the wall o nails all I see is nails. Copper is the obvious...

Ah, the arrogance of "science": it gives us ALL the answers... except for the ones that matter! What, how to cook the perfect turkey? NOW we can go back on target! the perfect way to cook a turkey is with bacon on top. Anyone who tells you different at a sca event is a damn dirty liar.

Yeah, well. One of my friends is "destroying the SCA" by allowing mullets (pagan stars) in heraldry now. Thing is the mullet is period; Christians used it to represent the five wounds of Christ and there is another meaning with the five parts of Catholicism (The father, the son, the holy ...

What's an "automatic authorization"? Some Kingdoms (not sure it's SCA-wide) grant chivalry authorizations in all weapons, and/or marshal status with the accolade. Oof. Do authorizations "expire" in those kingdoms too? I don't remember what it is here, but if you don't fight for ...

Ooo, good one! Last time some friends took me to Medieval Times, I was miffed about the no utensils thing, too. At least give me a spoon for my soup, and let me use my knife on the meat! I had someone tell me straight-faced at an event in NY once that "oh, they didn't use spoons in period"...

A couple of thoughts. 1. Do we know just how hard a lance hit when delivered from a mounted, knight charging? nope. we could, in theory, do tests with modern competitive jousters. But it'd always be an approximation. Modeling is a bad idea, biomechanics get complicated . 2. The target of the test w...

this is because kinetic energy is proportional to mass * (velocity ^2). really small, really fast carries more KE than big, heavy, and slow. momentum is m*v, so big and kind of fast carries more momentum than really small and really fast. then, of course, there's impulse, which is Force applied over...

lots and lots (and LOTS) of sticktime. Crosstrain, if possible.

getting stuck when someone else does something you've never seen before means you aren't sufficiently fluid and in the moment to react instead of think. The only way i know of to fix that is to fight, fight, fight.

in the 8th and 9th centuries, being an outcast, which is the proper term for a northern european without a lord during that time, was usually a not-so-slow death sentence.
