Eyvandr and Irish,
Sent you guys a gmail as well but I thought you would like to see these here as well.
Smaller socket size on the pommels. Also a first attempt that turned out halfway ok of katz hilts with an oval shape to the entire pommel.
These are held for you......

RoaK, The hilt (Guard) needs to be driven on so the rattan needs only to be shaved close to the ID of the socket but not so it fits. This is only important right at the spot were you want the hilt. The rattan will compress as you drive it on although you might need to shave a little of the rattan if...

All I will need to add from Ceawlins post is that it is 12 ga mild steel and around 1lbs and 10 oz. They started at a 6" diamiter, so 5 1/2" is about right. It is a bit hefty but will hold up to any thing SCA combat can throw at it. The Barony of Tir Ysgithr has used them on there unit war...

Daithi', Nice job on the handle and pommel. I really liked the look of the type of ball you used. The way they handle fighting sounds like how all the other hilts I have made for myself feel when using them. Thanks for the review. I am glad you like them. The only reason I missed you so much was tha...

Sunflash, You are right! I just re-measured it and they are 1 1/4" Check the ball ends on the one you bought at the war. They are the same. Just a retard moment on my part. Marshals Handbook Page 13 VII Weapons standards section 9 and 10 are the guide lines I use to make these hilts. Thanks for...

Destichado, The fix for that type of problem is to cut the rattan flush at the top and drill several times at different angles in to the rattan left in the handle with a 1/2" drill bit then work the bits and pieces left out with a screw driver. I used to do that with shovels, McClouds, and othe...

Simple full socket one hand cross hilt w/pommel for rattan.

Well last Sunday as a last minute project that was on my mind I made this. A simple full socket cross hilt for a one handed sword. It would fit 12th to 14th century Europe I would think. It is just a prototype so a bit of development yet to go on it. It will brass lag bolt through the pommel to hold...

Katzbalger hilt with twisted bar and brass ends for rattan

Well here is another. It was requested by someone and I liked how it turned out. The socket is 1 1/2" twisted two bar stock with brass ends. Due the the extra work and cost of the brass end I need $50 for this type of hilt. E mail me at hesseniron@gmail.com if you are intrested. Thanks Stefhan

Just a note on some other places you might like if you have time. In Cains there is a great small museum in the castle. Also a few timber framed houses that survived the war right across the street. In Bayeux there is a really nice home spun war museum on the outside of town and the German cemiantar...
