Yes, I've done a little maille myself in butted 14 gauge. It holds well, but for combat nothing beats riveted or welded. Spring as in the material, yes. I haven't seen it for sale, but I imagine it's more expensive... Could make up for it strength and reduction of weight.

Are you riveting yours? Flat or round ring?

You can also resize .jpg files using Windows Paint which is free and fairly user friendly. Quick and simple too.
