Re: Mysterious helmet

Just a single piece. The maille bit is tubular like a coif or standard.

The second picture is just a side view.

Re: Mysterious helmet

I have it in my possession, but I have no idea what it is. Maille is butted(galvy), so that among other things rules out a real historical piece. Possibly costume.

It could be worn almost looking like a Arab helmet except for the back piece of the helmet is open. Weird.

Mysterious helmet

Anyone know what this is?

Sized to be a helmet, too big for a pauldron. Could this be based on a real armor piece?

Re: Split Ring Maille - Advice needed

I've bought maille made with split rings and done projects of my own. Simply split rings are great. Much stronger than butted, easier than riveted(maybe even stronger), and comparable to welded with less effort involved.

I know they make stuff for lumberjack compititiions, Shark suits, and butchering.
Mailletec took over the welded mesh material biz from the ring lord.

Re: Stainless mesh rub-off

Are you talking about the mesh I sent you? If it is then it is stainless (302 or 304 alloy if I remember correctly...) That was sent to me with no cleaning or post work (it was part of the wholesale deal I had). I've gotten that exact same mesh bright, clean, and shiny with about an hour's worth of...

Re: Stainless mesh rub-off

Thanks for the further responses. I was afraid of that, but it likely it's more than simple dirt. I'll have to experiment more without damaging the maille. I too have worked with a lot of mesh material over the years and rub-off is rather rare, the material I currently have is the exception. Maybe s...

Re: Stainless mesh rub-off

Thanks, but I'm fairly sure it's stainless. Magnetic reaction is poor. It's definitely not galvanized, as that leaves a particular look(and smell), and would have been damaged by all the washing I did. Aluminum has a different ruboff and there would be a obvious weight difference. So even if stainle...

Stainless mesh rub-off

I have some small welded mesh material with a gray color to it. It leaves a heavy rub off if I handle it a lot. Thinking it was just dirt, I've put it through a couple runs in the washing machine and when that didn't solve the problem, I soaked it in a bucket using bar keepers friend. A lot of dark ...

Re: Scales for SCA armor

As was mentioned above, Polar Bear does mostly lamellar, but he can change the holes for a special order of scales, and some of his styles are excellent size/shape for early period scale armor. (I looked into this myself, a few years back!) I've dealt with Polar Bear before and also recommend him. ...

Re: Soldering maille(small links)

Figures soldering is only good for jewelry strength material... I have a bunch of 21 gauge rings which I figured might be small enough to get by with soldering. But it sounds like the connection would not be as strong as welded regardless of the size. Only good for jewelry. I don't want to weld badl...

Welded maille isn't historical either, but everyone loves it anyway. :)

Soldering is the poor man's alternative at least for small rings(what I'm thinking anyway).

I'm considering giving soldering a try with some mini chainmail rings. Is there a type of solder of decent strength for something like that?

If you want 150(I could do 300 or so), priority flat rate shipping is the cheapest method, so $21 total.
