Totally off topic... (just making sure nobody thinks I'm suggesting using these over rattan) Has anybody played with these: m They look fun, for say, backyard barbecues when you don't wanna put on armour. Never seen these before, but I think if I had one of the red ones I wouldn't be able to use it...

If you could do this helm SCA legal and still have the faceplate removable I would SO be interested in one. Especially if it came with the smaller nasal guard to change out with the faceplate.

The wife (who controlls the checkbook) says no helm that isn't SCA legal.

Are you sure it's Chinese? I've seen alot of period paintings of Arab soldiers with swords almost exactly like that one. Basically look like a Tai Chi sword without the Oriental ornamintation. Several examples are in the book "God's Warriors," I don't remember the publisher or author, but ...

Rosin, as I know it, is a hardened form of tree sap that is used to provide grip to the bows of stringed instruments. Rosin has been used for this for several hundred years. It makes sence that it would have had other uses in period.

You might try looking for riot gear for horses. It's not fencing mesh, it's solid lexan (sp?) cups. They're used in the SCA for mounted combat. I don't know if it will work for your needs or not, but it might be worth looking at.
