I glad to see that Mid 15th century Italian arm again. It once had brass edging. This is really unusual for the period. I know it was sold out of the Barry Collection by Sothebys. I was unaware the RA had bought it.

That is my absolute favorite as well. I got my copy on ebay for about $12. At the same time(within the week), I got the annual book with the article on the etching for about $15, also on ebay. The really neat thing about the Galiot's book, is that it tells you as much information about the suit as ...

My all time favorites are as follows: Boccia, L.G.; Coelho, E.T. - L'Arte Dell'Armature in Italia (This book is an excellent source for pitures of Italian armour. I'm sure the text is great too but it is in Italain and I don't read it so well. None the less it is still Number 1 on my list) Scalini, ...

IV.497 in the RA and and an extremely similar one in the Bargello are the only authentic klappvisiers that I am aware of (without going through all the pieces in my photo collection) with holes that SUGGEST a strap to hold down the visor. There is one in the Hungarian national that has a spring pin ...

I still do most of my work cold because I like to hold th epiece in my hand and control it carefully. However, when i need to move a lot of metal in a dramatic way there is nothing like hot work. In Wulfe's case we were turning a standard, straight-sided, bascinet into a more Veste Coburg like mosqu...

since this thread seems to have died down. Let me make my summary. There is a period (1100-1500) in which truly celtic art is extremely rare for decoration of personal items. This post have bean read over 1200 times as of today and all we have to show for it is a few scabbards and a bag. Celtic knot...

I've also been making the same helm for Duke Edmund (middle Kingdom, SCA) It is interesting that we both chose to make the back the same as the front. IN the original there is simply lattice work going all the way from the side band to the ridge band in the rear. I think the solid plate will help it...

These are lovely examples that illustrate my point exactly. These are all appropriate to time and place. All of them are knotwork. none of them are Celtic. They are lacking in the asymmetry sometimes found in Celtic art. They do not have the distinctive “Celtic cornersâ€Â

I think that in general, after the Bastard invades England, spangens will be right out. Before that actually, for new production, but there would be a few surviving pieces still in use on occasion. There are a couple of surviving spangenhelms outside of England that purport to have dates later than...

So then spangens were most likly never etched? Technically speaking "Merovingian" spangenhelms were decorated with punch work and repousee but not etching. Alcyoneus is right. Etching on armour is really a 16th century thing with roots in the late 15th century. All surviving 14th century borders we...

Off the top, there were knife scabbards found in the Wood Quay in Dublin (I think presently in the National Museum) and the book satchel for the Book of Ardah (sp). This took no time at all as those are fairly known examples. There is an ongoing discussion of where the knot work "originated." I wou...

Be that as it may, yes, I agree with you, Talbot. The art of one time and place should not be use to decorate the objects of another time and place in the context of historicial recreation.
