I have heard that C and T requires authorizing in a documented period style, but where is this written down? I couldn't find it in the Society rules or the Atlantian rules. Is it just in specific kingdoms? Yes, that is a Kingdom thing. The Society level rules are more open, dealing with things like...

The prototypical "main gauche", with the triangular knuckle guard is just post SCA period, but I don't see why you couldn't play with them under the rules as designed. Daggers for certain, with cross quillon and ring. Here is a good compendium of what is going on in the SCA with this style...

Kelly, I agree with what J-M said. Give the existing armor standards and blow strengths a try before you up-armor. This will have a few benefits. First, the C&T program has already gone through the "experimental weapon" stage at the corporate level, and been approved as a standard styl...

Re: observation concerning sideswords

I would advocate side sword in this kindom if the fighters had to wear a stiff cuirass for the torso and a modified helm....sallets, morions and kettlehelms come to mind for head protection.....a heavily quilted gambeson for arms and the same for legs.....This would allow you to swing with some aut...

How many are you expecting in the lists? Try giving each fighter a color (red, blue, yellow) and a number (1-6). That gives you 18 "slots" for 6 teams per round. Each round, make up a different grouping, such as all #1 are a team. Next round all colors are grouped by odd/even, or high/low ...

I don't know if Kydex would work for you or not. It is a pvc/acrylic blend that is very tough, and thermoformable. According to this websource: http://www.polymerplastics.com/formingrade_kydex.shtml it runs about $25 sq ft in .25" thickness when you get a standard 48"x96". With pvc gl...

Sir Gaston of Caid used to come out occasionally with a rattan main gauche. It had a triangular guard and quillons with two nested washers welded on the ends to meet the 1.25" requirement. I've seen him post here, so he might give better details. I have, on rare occasions, used a 38" sword...

Re: Fighting award names (SCA)

Is rattan combat that small a percentage of fighting in Lochac? Not to speak for the good people of Lochac, but I would imagine that when the GoA's were established for Archery and Rapier, the thought was that armored fighters had the Chivalry to strive for. The archers and rapier fighters were not...

As to the area of contact on a thrust with a rattan stick versus a strike with a rattan stick - the flat circular tip is a larger initial point of contact than the cylindrical edge. I'll stick with my position that greater impact can be generated with a strike than with a thrust, the mechanics of t...

In my opinion, the greatest artificiality caused by our rules is the invulnerability of the lower leg. Even more than acted blows? 'Cause that's the Big One to me. The difference is that you, as a struck fighter, may choose to yeild instead of acting out wounded limbs. I think that invulnerable are...
