Re: My mail so far
Ok so here is the updated pictures with what I am working with now. I made sure to get some close ups on the shoulder area as well. First we have front, back and side views. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8086/8463929055_b629ee72a5.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8465027398_95459ede8e.jpg http...

Re: My mail so far
Ok I think I get what everyone is saying. I will post some pictures later tonight with an update. I've got the body all together and definitely have a "D" shape with a flat line right under the armpit. I see what you mean about the wrinkle, but I'm not quite sure how to fix it. Once again, I'll post...

Re: My mail so far
Ok so I'm back. Finally got my new diagonal cutters and am happily snipping away. However, I've got to break in my calluses again. :( So I've got the top closed in and I'm working on finalizing the body shape. Couple of questions though - 1) I originally was thinking of inserting some triangular gor...

I also bought the "Lot of brass pieces" = $10.
Thanks for everything. Can't wait to get my hands on these and see them.

Re: Gauging Interest - Welded Bronze Maille & Hidden Gorgets
Thanks for the advice Klaus. I knew it sounded like too good an idea for it to be original. The only tricky part I see (which means there's probably more) is where the maille attaches to the collar. I'm thinking I'll have the maille come up the neck an inch or so, and the leather up another i...

Re: Flat Ring Titanium Maille
Just to clarify and to make sure I'm reading this correctly. If i were to order a fancy titanium shirt at the top of the line and paid up front instead of spending $2000 I could spend $1500. Which already would be a fantastic deal And then, if you received enough orders to make a price break of 25% ...

Re: motto translation
One trick I learned with google translate is to reverse engineer the translation - i.e. put the Latin in the box and translate back into English. Helps pick up some of the idiosyncrasies in language that way. Doing that melius facer comes back better to do, with the other two and facite melius trans...

Re: Sourcing flat rivet rings & round section rings butted/r
I'm the one halfway to point barrow. I looked quite a bit at buying rings to knit my own, sure that I wasn't interested in making them myself. ringlord is definitely the cheapest that I found for rings - but shipping is going to kill you unless your in Canada. Riveted is even more expensive if you w...

So for whatever reason at work tonight it popped into my head that I ordered legs from someone. Like eight years ago. This would have been the last day or two of Pennsic 2005 at night. If memory serves, it was cuisses and knees out of steel, munitions grade, nothing fancy - about $150. I wrote you c...

Re: Viking age mail questions.
One other thing to consider if you have never done mail before. I'm currently working on my first project. I went with butted in part because of space/noise constraints and also in part because this is very much a learning project for me. This being my first mail I've definetly made some mistakes. E...

If you already have a shirt made, you could cut on/add to/reform it to fit you better. You wouldn't necessarily need a completely new shirt just because you are switching to LH. Unless what you have just will not work. Or you want to. Then go right ahead!

How did they do that? Or do you know who did?
So I was perusing fabrics-store.com tonight and found this image http://www.fabrics-store.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/UGcLuy.png I love the trim on the yellow bliaut. So guess I'm taking a break from mail for a while. My cutters broke. Snapped off right at the pivot point. Now I need to order a new pair. It'll be at least a week before they can come in. I've got a little already cut but it won't last me more than a few days. C'est la vie. Merry Christmas

Re: My mail so far
Well thanks for all the tips folks! Doing this without a ton of reference is a little tricky. So here's where I'm at now. I wasn't happy with the shape of the mantle top, so I actually split it and made it more oval. That let things fall over the curvy bits a lot better. Now I need to close up the o...

Which is the diameter of the rings? For a hauberk of butted maille of 10mm I.D. rings, I was able to weave 1 Kg in 2 hours, I think you will take much less than predicted as soon as you start to optimize your working process.   Holy moly that's fast!   I'...

Konstantin - I think? it makes sense. I'll have to play with it a bit when I get that far. I'm not quite sure how to put a 45-deg in mail when its straight lines though. Re: Kangaroo Leather for Articulations
I would say we use leather that is too stiff. Not necessarily too thick. My little bits of buff are thick, but flexible. The few pieces I have that probably have original leather in them show that the leather was pretty thick. But the message is the same. Wade So what's the best way to make leather...

So two weeks into my haubergon and thought I'd post some pics. I started this right after Thanksgiving. I think it's coming along well.
