Re: Galvanized Maille
There's a cutting trick you can use with butted mail that puts all the cutting wear elsewhere on the edge than out at the breakable corners -- into the middle of the blade. It's the pre-stretched coil. Just take either end of a coil and pull it out to a bit over twice its original length, making a ...

Re: Maille direction and fitting.
When you're fitting maille - Right now as I'm working around the neckline I kind of put the piece on, see how it's fitting and then look at the next row and try to visualize if it's getting smaller or bigger in the next section. Add or subtract links as necessary. But then I finish and it seems like...

Re: Galvanized Maille
Thank you everyone for the advice. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to kill myself making this shirt for a hobby. I've never made anything out of maille before so that is one reason I went with butted. I wanted something that would be easy to fix when I messed up! Trying to fit the piece I've...

Re: Galvanized Maille
Sorry, guess I should of been more specific. I'm using it for SCA heavy fighting. My biggest concern was I thought I read something about the galvanized wire being potentially hazardous to health - especially if it was heated.

Galvanized Maille
So I ordered some 14 gauge mild steel wire online at Thanksgiving. Happy to start my project I dived right in. I've realized now that this is actually galvanized wire. I've already cut out 4,000 or so rings so I can't exactly return it. Is it okay to continue using this for butted maille? I'm not an...

Maille direction and fitting.
Ok. So I'm knitting my first set of Maille. I've got a section and I'm not sure which way is up. I think up is when I hold two corners the Maille hanging down contracts into a v shape. If I hold it the other way the links all stay stretched out, but the top row collapses. Does this make sense? Secon...

Re: Hardening mail.
Well thanks for the information everyone. I'm pretty knew to armouring so I knew there was likely a reason no body did it, but I wasn't really sure what the answer was. I know now a little bit more than I did yesterday.

Hardening mail.
I was talking with my dad today about making mail and he asked why I wouldn't harden the mail after knitting so in theory using a lighter gauge, and still keeping it from pulling apart. (this is with butted mail). The short answer was I didn't have an answer and thought I would ask the archive. In t...

Your Grace,
I was actually looking at this one:

Butted Blackened MS Haubergeon Large
Any chance you have extra rings for it?
Thank you very much,

Re: Free Shipping on maille items!!!
Do you have rings to go with ch-024? I'm looking to pick something up - but would probably need to modify/make it bigger/longer.
Thanks!

Bazubands and Maille (SCA)
So I'm trying to do a mid-12th century kit and know I need maille. For SCA though I also need hard elbows. I was thinking of using bazubands and putting maille over it, however, I'm not sure if this will create any issues that I haven't seen. Anyone tried this? Thoughts comments?
Thanks!

Re: FS- new Spangen, SCA
Mattmaus,
I was talking to an old friend from the midrealm last night and he still has my old helm - which he's returning to me. Thank you for your time, but I really can't pass up the price of my old one. (free)
Thank you,

Re: FS- new Spangen, SCA
If I have the helmet still at that point, and a schedule can be coordinated, absolutely. I would much rather let everyone interested try on every helmet I make, rather than not. I can give measurements and descriptions, and my best guess, and I'm pretty good at it, but it's just not the same. I'd r...

Re: FS- new Spangen, SCA
Well I might be interested. I see your in Colorado Springs. I come back to the Springs in about two weeks for vacation. Would it be possible for me to try it on - if it's still available? I completely understand if its not. I think it might be a little too big for my head anyway - and I've got time ...

Re: A Comprehensive Discussion on Mail
This haubergon is 2mm X 8mm ID woven out of SS. It is almost finished now and weighs in at 29 lbs. When its finally done it will probably weigh around 35 lbs. It protects alright, and has held up remarkably well under combat but is very heavy. This shirt is 1.6mm X 6mm woven out of galvi. It weghs ...

Re: A Comprehensive Discussion on Mail
Sounds good. So I reckon I'll be going with the .062" wire for a nice smooth maille that will withstand the rigors of combat, and also be a good practice for me.
Thanks for the help all.
(Now to go do it...oh wait...look shiny things on the internet!

Re: A Comprehensive Discussion on Mail
Once again, thank you for all the help. One more question. We've been talking about wire gauge being 14 or 16. I'm looking at rings on ringlord.com and this is what is says. Mild Steel 16g Wire Dia.: 0.062'' 1.6 mm Sold by the lb 16g SWG = 14 AWG So for our purposes does this spec out to being 16g o...

Re: A Comprehensive Discussion on Mail
Ok. I really do appreciate everyone's feedback and feel that I am at the point of making an informed decision. So I understand that pretty much whatever I do it's not going to look right. But that being said, pretty much no one else is going to have authentic mail either. So they goal then would be ...

Re: A Comprehensive Discussion on Mail
In making riveted, a heat source is wanted to normalize the links, but this is less a thing in fixing up, as the links for the job should already be normalized. Welder wire will need to be normalized, definitely, perhaps before you even go to coil it, as welder wire is springy and won't take a 90-d...

Combining Lamellar and Mail
Greetings, I was going to put this all in one post but I realized that it really dealt with two different subjects. Hence, two posts. If the mods would prefer to combine them, that's cool. I'm interested in doing a mail/lamellar combo because it's period for me (approx mid 12th C poulain) I'll be fi...

A Comprehensive Discussion on Mail
Greetings, I've been out of the loop for several years and am just getting back into the swing of things. I will be participating in the SCA and am going for a mid 12th century poulain, or children of the crusaders persona. Because of this I realize I need mail. I've never worked with mail before an...
