Archery= Laurel Balin I don't know. Is the Order of the Laurel, as practiced in the SCA, the right place for someone whose expertise is in the combat arts? It seems more odd to place these warlike fellows in the midst of illustrators and embroiderers than to place them within the chivalry. Neither ...

Are you saying it wasn't? Heck if we(sca) are going to allow them to fight then they get to work towards the fighting peerage. Balin <snip> Fencing was used by rogues and thugs <snip> Balin Oh? Really? That's about as accurate as a 40lb sword, and tipping a knight on his back so he couldn't get up a...

Fair enough my answer was a reason that i was told. I originally thought they should just be part of the fighting peerage since they fight in the SCA. That went over like a Lead balloon let me tell you [quote="dukelogan"]brother balin, i would disagree with you on one thing. in atlantia, a...

Unless there's some sort of safe manner to discard your bow, though, just drawing your seax and going at it is just plain stupid, and unsafe. A polearm is one thing, it's not under tension and if it breaks, well, it's replaceable. A bow is an expensive piece of equipment that is under a high degree...

I really wonder about this idea some of us have that medieval archers only fired en masse. If someone could show me reasonable documentation that medieval archers were only used en masse, I would be grateful for the lesson. Frankly, why does this even matter in the SCA context? Here are the only qu...

No. After 40 years a new peerage will be treated as a lower peer. CA is not worthy of a peerage ever. Fencing was used by rogues and thugs and even in the SCA the tourneys and battles lend to that same thread of thugs. Not peerlike sorry. BTW i think it is pretty cool and had it been as big when i s...

Calibration shots prior to the fight help to limit this happening because both fighters know what the other thinks is a good shot. YMMV

Hjalmr, The brims on burgonets have a couple of drawbacks in regards to SCA combat (which the bar grill makes me assume this is for). They get beat up very easily. They chew up rattan. It has always been my preference to weld a 1/4" bar to the edge of the brims. Done well it approximates the l...
