Re: Starter Helms?
Thanks for the plugs guys. Rather made my day. My spangenhelms are at $175 these days, however I still make a basic starter bucket for $75. Its just a spangen top, solid back, 3 bar bargrill (the rst of the face is solid) no nasal, simple basic helm. ALso, for anyone close enough to local to make th...

I dont consider hockey gloves by themselves to be safe. Street hockey gloves with some metal added to the cuff and metacarpal and used under baskets are fine, at least as far as being safe. Of course they are still butt ugly and non period, but you can unly do so much in a day.

Re: One day kit-How would you do it?
I think I may have been to blame for the "one day helm" post you read. Let me point out that I also said in that post that "I really wish I had the time to see how WELL I could make a helm for myself, instead of how FAST". And that was just making the hat, not the whole kit. Still, I have pretty muc...

Re: "american tool company" shear
Pitbull, I didnt actually buy the blades, just spoke to them on the phone. They gave me measurments. Speaking of, does anyone here own a b1? If so, could you measure those blages for me? If they are just a little narrower I might be able to make them work on this shear.

Its a solid hat. I made it for myself, and I have had enough head injuries thanks
. I do wish I had figured out the new way of blackening before making the hat though.

Re: "american tool company" shear
follow up If you are VERY careful you can regrind the blades with bench grinder followed by wet stone. And I do mean very careful, as you have to have a even edge and you have to go very slowly to avoid heating enough to effect the temper (which is on the iffy side already or we wouldnt be having th...

Re: "american tool company" shear
Puns aside, the dif in width is 3/4" on the lower blade and 7/16" on the upper. That seems like a lot of grinding but it may be an option.

"american tool company" shear
I dont know if any of you recall, but about a year ago I posted about a beverly knockoff shear that I had purchased from "American Tool Company" (out of china btw) I picked this shear out of all the other knock offs because it stated in the product discription that it could use the actual blades for...

Re: accdntprone and Finn O'Shannon review(sale and actual he
This was the "one day spangen" that I posted a while back. I made it for myself because I needed a helm for the thing out at randoms. Turns out, there wasnt fighting lol. Anyway, finn needed a helm fast while waiting on another helm he had on order to be finished. So I sold him this one at a reduced...

Yeah, the camera flash really made every little flaw in the surface stand up and shout. Usualy I make the helm as follows Sizing, then cut out my parts. Bend the browband into a hoop and buttweld. Then refine shape and take the top edge a couple passes over the ball stake to curve it inward. Dish si...

Offer to help stands. I know you feel that you got yourself into this and should get yourself out, but you have helped me out in the past. Hell, I use the spangen pattern you gave me to this day, and Im using the books you gave me to help teach my son (who made his first helm the other day)

Another one day helm
SO anyway, I sold the last one to a guy who needed a helm fast, so had to make myself another. Needed it for practice tuesday, but also needed to get back to working on helms for orders. One of these days I would really like to make a helm for myself and see how well I can make in, instead of how fa...

Re: New Old Kiln. How much trouble will i get into...
I don't think scale is going to be your primary concern. I'm pretty sure jewelers like electric furnaces because it's basically a neutral environment. If it's not an oxygenating environment you don't get scale. There are two primary concerns here AFAIK. First, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, and if necessary...

Re: Reinforcing a 16 Ga. Bascinet for SCA combat
I have on a couple occasions made sca helms from 16 ga. (I dont like to because IMO it dents to easy even if it is legal) What I did was use extra layers where ever I could. The dif. between that and what you are suggesting is, I build the helm that way from the start, I didnt try to retrofit after ...

Roofing nails, I have used them on coat of plates and the like. Flat head rivets, thats an idea. I think Ill order some and try a helm with them and see how it goes. Worse case I can always use them up on the bargrills. Brass rivets, never again :P. Unless someone asks for them and is willing to pay...

Well, almost finished anyway. Gotta take a bit of emery cloth to the bar grill, put a last bit of polish on the nasal, and spraypaint the inside.

The total after shipping was $54 and change. Is there a cheaper place to get rivets? Between paying to much for steel and paying to muc...

for those who do not recognise the pic, this was my one day hat from a few weeks ago. The bands are 16 ga, the panels, cheekplates, back, and nasal are 14ga. The bla...

I particularly like the way you did the slatted back. Much nicer than the usual barstock and hope they put an avintail over it style. Not sure, have to play with it a bit, but I might have to steal that
