Work so far. Still need to do the slatted back and bargrill, then give the bands and nasal a final polish and rivet everything.

That is one ugly hat. I mean, my "starter buckets" are kinda ugly but damn! Still, some of my very firsts helms were that ugly. Every now and then one of them still turns up, much to my dismay. (But no, thaat aint one of them thank god)

looking for a kiln
This is going to be some time in the future yet, but I want a kiln for hardening and tempering. Any suggestions as to where to look for a used one, and or what I should look for in a kiln and how much I should expect to pay? Do they tend to be gas fired? Electric? 110 or 220? I have heard a lot abou...

Re: harbor freight planishing hammer
For the most part I do helms in 14 ga mild, so Im hoping this thing is going to prove useful. Even if I do end up needing a bigger compressor. Right now I planish with hammer and ball stake, so this almost has to be an improvement.

Re: looking for 18-20 ga 1050
It looks like Precision Steel is in Chicago (and Charlotte NC). So it appears you have 2 choices within easy driving distance. Almost all of us are not so lucky. Wade either way Im looking at a 200ish mile one way drive. So maybe if Im going to do this a group order would be a good idea. Anyone wan...

And i have ben thinkjng a spangen may be better shaped for my head especially if i added a leather drape to it. Yep. offer still stands, however I have two more hats to finish before I can...

1/8th" rivets everywhere. Even when I use 3/16th" rivets on the rest of a helm I still use 1/8th" on the bar grill. It just doesnt look like enough metal left when you put a 3/16" hole through a 1/4" bar. The bars are also fitted into the vertical bar and welded in place. The bargrill protrudes slig...

Re: Barbute pattern?
I have several of talbots patters, but his barbute isn't quite what Im looking for. Was a guy use to come out to the old rokeldon practice years ago that had a truly rockin t slot barbute, Im trying to find a pattern that comes close to it. Talbots patters are nice though.
