Wont have an air compressor big enough to run it, but Ill have the planishing hammer and I can start wathing the newspaper for an aircompressor. So all in al...

oculars
So somone mentioned putting oculars on some of my spangens instead of just the nasal that I usually do. Think Im going to try it. So some questions that come to mind, Should the ocular be purely ornamental and sit outside the bargrill (as the nasal I currently make does)? Or should it be an actual s...

Re: spangens for sale
Have your new guy hit me up whenever he is ready, Im not going anywhere. Oculars.... Has me thinking. Should they be ornamental and sit on top of the bar grill like the current nasal does, or should they be part of the helm with the bargrill starting below them? I have seen hats both ways, not sure ...

Re: Guy at pennsic with all the brass frufrus for helms
I agree, both my tools and my skills have room for improvement. I make a solid hat, but it is no where near what I WANT to make. Its all pretty much a work in progress. The fact that I had to start over getting tools and such just about a year and a half ago has not helped, but I am slowly getting t...

Re: Guy at pennsic with all the brass frufrus for helms
Hmm. After cost of mats, prob. about ten, maybe twelve on the outside. That number may change if I can find a better price on steel.

Re: Guy at pennsic with all the brass frufrus for helms
Im not sure if any of the above is suppose to be a shot in my direction, so I suppose I shall show a tad of restraint in my reply. I am trying to find a way to make the stuff I make a little prettier so as to make it sell, without having to jack my price up so high that people can't afford to buy it...

Re: Review of Great Helm made by Accdntprone
Sorry about that. I usually flare the bottom of a spangenhelm, but not a greathelm. Mostly becaue the greathelms seem big enough to not need it. That said, I would have been happy to do so had I known you wanted such. I can still take care of it if you like.

Re: spangens for sale
Ok, let me try to address some of the questions, Yep, I will size then to fit. The one in the pic is sized for me (23 1/2" nugget) The panels and cheelplates are 14 ga. The connecting bands are 16 ga. The slats for the back are 1/8th" by 1" bar stock. If you go with a solid back, it would be 14 ga. ...

Kid needs a root canal and insurance only pays a part of it. So I need to sell two of these post haste. Turn around time will be about a month (total for both hats) Price is $175 each. Re: Guy at pennsic with all the brass frufrus for helms
Guess Ill have to look for other was to pretty up the spangenhelms. I already dress them up a tad by blackening part of the helm and polishing part of the helm. Maybe Ill try brass rivets and nasal on a completely blackened helm (welded inside anyway, so it will still be legal with brass rivets)

Re: Guy at pennsic with all the brass frufrus for helms
Most of the items I was interested in looked cast, not etched. In any event, having looked into it a bit I have to say the price of just the mats is prohibitive.

I can make you one. Take a couple weeks, cost about $150 unless you want brass frufrus on it.

Re: Guy at pennsic with all the brass frufrus for helms
Got no issue with your guy. I'm just looking for a way to make my spangenhelms look a little less humdrum. That said, I sell them for $150 - $175. I can not spend hundreds of dollars to pretty up a $150 hat. So I'm looking for some basic (and inexpensive) brass work.

Re: big rivets or little rivets
I did that before I got the welder. Now I pretty much put the whole hat togeather except for the bargrill (assuming its not a closed face helm) polish, then layout, center punch, drill and rivet.
