Re: big rivets or little rivets

accdntprone - Did you see the thread where Hal was creating the impression of rivets with his TIG? As I recall, they came out very nice, and it would seem easier than riveting an already welded helmet. Interesting idea. My welder isnt up to it (I just have a little flux core buss box) but maybe if ...

I already weld my spangens togeather, mosyly cause its a lot easier to polish if you dont have to dodge rivet heads. Rivets go in last.

One thing of note, don't get it too hot. If you do ( I did the first time) you get a light gray instead of black. Of course you can just hit it again.

big rivets or little rivets

I usually use 1/8th " rivets on the bargrill and 3/16" rivets every where else. The other day I made a spangen and found myself out of 3/16th" rivets so I did the whole thing in 1/8th" rivets. I daknow, I kinda think it looks better, and prob. does better as far as glancing surface. What do you all ...

Anyway, old charcoal grill, hotted up with some forced air, heat the thing then spray on pam. Repeat about three times. black2.jpg black1.jpg Now I have to wire wheel and then polish...

Thanks. Funny thing, turns out that the thing I'm going to this weekend won't have any fighting, so I could have taken my time with the helm. Oh well. I have decided I kinda like the hat anyway. Its decent, solid, not to pretty. Its in keeping with the whole merc persona. These aren't my dress cloth...

Yeah, Im spoiled. I started fighting in a closed face helm, no way I could go back to it. ANyway, my usual version of this helm is about 2 days work. Call it 16 hours ish. This one was one long 12 hour stint. One of the reasons the blackening looks a bit rough. I gotta replace those tubes in the sho...

Picture of the above mentioned one day spangen. This pic is the only one I have handy, in it the helm was not quite done. Some riveting, and touch up on the finish remained. How do YOU blacken?

I use a can of food release and an oxy mapps torch. It works well enough, in that it aint complicated, gives me a decently tough finish, and seems to reduce rusting quite a bit. On the other hand its kinda a pain, have to go over a given area several times to get even finish, and the little compress...

Quick cheat for canvas cop. A bit of super glue or liquid stitch around the hole you are putting your rivet through will help stop unraveling. Also, washers :)

I can make you a sheet metal shield basket. Im assuming you want to avoid the common welded barstock type because they way so much? Also, is your shield going to be alum. or wood? For a wood shield, drill your holes all the way through, but countersink your bolt heads on the outside. Then you glue c...
