My boy's first hat

My son is just about to be old enough to start playing sca heavy, so I set him to work making his first helm. (with some help, mostly with the welding, and lots of "helpful" comments :)). It aint perfect, but for the kids first effort its pretty nice. Should serve him well.

Re: Gauging interest in helm tops.

I use to buy helm tops from rough from the hammer pretty often. These days I do a lot less armoring, and so when one comes up I just pound it out myself. Makes a diff of a few hours at least (for me). Should I start building more hats again (and its looking like I might) I would be interested in buy...

Re: anyone have an opinion on harbor freights break?

That really sucks :(. I was kinda doubtful about the discription, which says it can bend up to 12 ga. Still, I was hoping it could manage 14ga mild. Less than that and its of no use to me.

Re: serious shield painters of the SCA, a question, pease.

Dont know if anyone has suggested this, but I screen print my arms on heavy black canvas and glue it to the shield. (or contact cement if using an alum. shield)

Re: wtb, one of those russian made steel anvils

I have been considering it. WOnder how much it would cost me to have the face milled flat (railroad track is kinda rounded) Or if they even could mill it without annealing it first... And machinests want to comment?

Re: Greathelm for Hacky2447

Vermillion, pretty sure its something like that. Either the seller shipped the wrong piece or he simply didnt know what he had. So now I dont know exactly what I have. Except that it for damn sure isn't just cold rolled mild steel. I have made this pattern out of 14 ga stainless with less trouble lo...

Greathelm for Hacky2447

One thing about this damn hat, it should last a LONG time. Since I moved I haven't had a good good local place to buy metal, so I get it pretty much where ever I can. This online merchent or that, ebay, whatever. So this current chunk of 14 ga cold rolled came from ebay. For one reason or another it...

wtb, one of those russian made steel anvils

You know, one of the ones harbor freight carried for a while. I know they are nothing to write home about, but would still be a big upgrade from the 55# cast iron "anvil shaped opject" that Im using now. And while I have found some much nicer anvils out there, they are pretty much out of my price ra...

Re: 1st Helmet Project

A lot of this will be a repeat of what somone already said, but here goes. I have made several greathelms, both this pattern and talbots von prach pattern. 16 ga is sca legal, though I dont make sca hats in less then 14 ga myself. IMO 16 ga mild dents to easy. The down side is the pattern (especiall...

Where are they now?

Anyone else ever wonder? I had my very first helm come back to me at Pennsic last year. (after 15 years of service) I took it off the guys hands and made the poor soul a new hat. Got me to wondering though. I have made a few dozen hats over the years, and except for several locals have never heard f...

Where the ^%$ do I find (^%(&^% brass!?!?!

Use to buy it in 4" x 18" strips at the hardware store, or if they were out Id buy a door kicker and cut it up. Now no one has it, and door kickers are all alum. with a brass finish. WHich wont stand up to any working btw. So Im nearly finished with a greathelm (senric pattern) just have to clean up...

I would use one for dishing helm tops, knees, elbows, ect. Im pretty sure rough from the hammer uses a a power hammer for the same thing, perhaps he would be willing to provide pictures of his tooling?
