starter bucket w/ ocular
Starter bucket with ocular added. Also shown with avintail (just roughly hung on) to show how the helm will look with an avintail.

Re: Brand New to everything
Pick up a couple of talbots patterns as a good place to start. His von prach (excuse the probable misspelling) barrel helm perhaps. In addition to the pattern in comes with a nice walk through, useful tools list, ect. Haunt the local scrap yards, and / or find a local sheet metal shop. A lot of stuf...

Re: How acceptable are unplanished/minorly planished items
To repeat something already said above, it depends. On you, on the piece you are making, and what you are making it for. My starter buckets fly off the shelf faster than I can make them, and they are only roughly planished before being blackened. That said, I enjoy making a custom helm and trying to...

Re: looking for roman helm for 24 inch head od spun dome
I have done a roman (ish) helm in the past. Which one though? Pratorian?
Not sure on spun domes. You can get pre dished helm haves (or prewelded for that matter) from rough from the hammer. Might those serve?

Re: Dishing, how do you do it?
New press with kinda crude home made tooling... press3.jpg press2.jpg press1.jpg I want to replace the form with one that is solid, or at least solid-er. This one is 3/16" mild steel dished into a bit of 6" pipe, then welded in place and the void under it filled with cement. Not sure how well it wil...

Re: Dishing, how do you do it?
Ok, have the press. Made my first attempt at tooling. Took a small piece of 6 inch pipe, dished some 3/16" plate into it. Welded the 3/16" plate to the bit of pipe. Turned the piece over and filled the under side with cement. Now for the striker piece. Cut one end off of a 4lb sledge. Ground the fac...

Not really fair to blame fedex I guess. I use a third party company called Print Depot, because for a small fee they come out to my shop one a week, pick stuff up and ship it via fedex. (The nearest fedex office is a 3 hr round trip). Plus I just got the guys address again, and I have not sent anyth...

Re: Dishing, how do you do it?
Currently trying to duplicate something I used out at black bird armory. They were using an arbor press with some rather clever tooling for dishing. I did a whole spangen top (4 panels and bands) in less than half an hour. Usually about 2 hours work dishing by hand. Also, the result was much cleaner...

I am trying to find someone who can pick up a press for me. Its benchtop so it shouldn't be a problem for one person to move it around. Seller just isn't interested in shipping it and its a REALLY good price.....

Re: Gaunts
I have had fairly good luck with clangs pattern (pattern 3 here). Only changed the thumbs a little, and at the wrists used slots instead of holes for the rivets to let the wrist move more naturally. One of my current projects is to make them in hardened 1050.

Re: Dishing, how do you do it?
While I am looking to improve my tooling to be more productive, produce a finer product, and yes spare my hands and arms from further wear and tear, I do feel the need to point out that I made and sold almost 400 helms in 2013... Now here's hoping I can improve my tools and my skills with said tools...

I have been using the above for years. You are correct about vibration transferring to my hand. Unfortunately also use them for stakes so I can't change to a wood handle or even wrap the handle. So I just wear a heavy glove.

I made an axe specifically for Pennsic a couple years ago. Couple days before war I got a fortune cookie that said "You will bring sunshine into many lives". So I named my axe sunshine..... My point is this, you can't force these things. The right name will come to you in time.

My last major concern with that helm, not sure if you can see in the pic but the bottom edge of that ocular is resting on a piece of 1/4" round stock. The more I thought about it the more I worried about the one perfect shot cauing that to deform just enough for the edge on the ocular to pop under t...

In this pic it still needs a bit more polishing and more rivets. The avintail is just tied on with a bit of wire to show what the helm is going to look like (he is actually providing his own avintail). Im thinking for my first ocular it turned out ok. Vision is surprisingly good as well. ocular3sm.j...
